Invitek Diagnostics
Invitek Diagnostics is a biotechnology company that develops and manufactures molecular biology reagents, sample collection devices, and molecular detection kits. Founded in 1992 in Berlin, Germany, the company focuses on nucleic acid extraction and stabilization, DNA synthesis services, and laboratory testing solutions for life sciences and applied diagnostics.[1]
Invitek Diagnostics markets its products in more than 50 countries through a global distributor network.[2] It operates research and development activities in Berlin, regional sales support in Bangalore, India, and its main manufacturing, corporate, and R&D facility in Tondela, Portugal.[3] Since 2023, the company has been a subsidiary of ALS Limited.[4]
Products
Invitek Diagnostics develops molecular biology reagents and related products used across life sciences research and laboratory testing. Its portfolio supports applications including microbiome and metabolome research, food safety, biopharmaceutical workflows, infectious disease testing, life sciences research (RUO), and animal health.[5]
The product range includes sample collection and stabilization products, DNA and RNA extraction kits, DNA clean-up and purification kits, chemical DNA synthesis services, and detection assays such as qPCR, ELISA and lateral flow tests.[5]
History
The company was founded in 1992 as Invitek Gesellschaft für Biotechnik & Biodesign mbH and was among the first biotech companies at the Biomedical Park in Berlin-Buch. In 1998, the company filed a patent for its proprietary nonchaotropic chemistry, leading to innovative nucleic acid extraction and purification technologies including RTP, PSP, and MSB[6], and in 2004 introduced the InviMag® magnetic particles technology for use on automated purification platforms.[7]
In 2009, Invitek Gesellschaft für Biotechnik & Biodesign mbH was acquired by Stratec SE, and was renamed STRATEC Molecular GmbH.[8]
As STRATEC Molecular GmbH, over the next decade, the company launched new technologies, including the InviGenius® automation platform and the Universal kit series for DNA/RNA extraction from pathogens and genomic DNA.
In 2019, STRATEC SE sold its nucleic-acid purification business, including all shares held in STRATEC Molecular GmbH; the transaction closed on 31 March 2019.[9] Following its acquisition by the Nuvisan Group, the company was renamed Invitek Molecular GmbH (effective 1 April 2019).
In 2022, Invitek Molecular GmbH adapted its systems to comply with the IVDR regulatory requirements for in vitro medical devices, and in January 2023, ALS Limited acquired Invitek Molecular GmbH.[10]
In 2024, Invitek Diagnostics announced that its rapid real-time PCR method for Salmonella spp. received certification from the AOAC Research Institute.[11] In 2025, MicroVal approved the issuance of a certificate for the InviScreen Salmonella spp. Detection Kit.[12]
Also in 2024, the company expanded its microbiome sample management portfolio to support parallel metagenomic and metabolomic analyses, including products intended to stabilize both DNA and metabolites for multi-omics workflows.[13]
Inviblog
Invitek Diagnostics publishes InviBlog, a company-run blog featuring articles on laboratory methods, product information, protocol evaluation, and industry topics. The blog is organized by application areas, including life sciences, microbiome research, and food safety.[14]
