Inworld AI
Inworld.ai (also known as Inworld or Inworld AI) is an artificial intelligence application that brings together multiple machine learning models including natural language models, speech-to-text models, rules engines, OCR models, and event triggers to create AI-driven virtual characters that can perceive and interact with their environment audibly and visually.[1]
Users can create interactive characters able to generate real-time voice and text dialogue and interactions by describing a character in natural language and adjusting personality dials within Inworld's no-code studio.[2][3][4]
Inworld's machine learning models are designed based on the human brain with perception, cognition, and behavior-related models that enable its AI characters to understand and interact with their environment.[1] The technology has applications in the gaming industry,[5][6][7] the metaverse,[8] the entertainment industry,[9] and for advertising and branding.[10][11]
In 2022, Disney chose the company for its Disney Accelerator program.[9][12] During the accelerator's Demo Day in November 2022, Disney demonstrated a 'Droid Maker' prototype developed in collaboration with Inworld that will allow fans to design the look and personality of an interactive droid from the Star Wars universe.[13][14]
In December 2022, GamesBeat's lead writer Dean Takahashi included Inworld on his annual list of gaming industry predictions for the year ahead.[15] Saying one of the key stories of 2023 would be AI bringing big changes to the industry, he claimed: "Startups like Inworld AI plan to use the rapidly accelerating intelligence technology to make smarter non-player characters (NPCs) in games so that the engagement will seem so much more realistic."[15]
Inworld was the Bay Area Inno Awards' 2022 artificial intelligence honoree.[16] The awards recognize nine startups it believes have the power to, "fundamentally change the game in their respective fields."[16]
History
Inworld was founded in 2021 by the team behind API.ai, which was acquired by Google and renamed Google Dialogflow.[9] In June 2022, Academy Award winner John Gaeta, famous for creating the 'bullet-time' effect in The Matrix movies and co-founding Lucasfilm's immersive entertainment division, joined Inworld as its Chief Creative Officer.[8][17]
The company has raised $70 million in venture capital funding from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Bitkraft Ventures, Section 32, Intel Capital, M12 (Microsoft's Investment Fund), CRV, and Founders Fund.[18][19][20][21][22]
Inworld announced in November 2022 that it would be giving out $1 million in grants to developers experimenting with integrating Inworld characters into their games or immersive experiences.[23][24] Several notable figures were announced as judges of the competition including sci-fi novelist Neil Stephenson, Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell, film producer and former LucasFilm executive Kiri Hart, and Academy Award winner John Gaeta.[23][24]
