Irakli Gogia (Georgian: ირაკლი გოგია) (born May 20, 1982 Tbilisi) is a Georgian theatre director and art researcher.
Biography
Irakli Gogia was born May 20, 1982 in Tbilisi.
In 1997–2000, he studied at the Art College, Tbilisi, Georgia. He then graduated from the drama directing faculty (under the tutelage of Medea Kutchukhidze, George Margvelashvili, and Avtandil Varsimashvili) of the Shota Rustaveli Theatre and Film University in 2006 (Master’s degree).
Irakli Gogia has directed over 40 performances at Georgian theatres and also cooperates with other theatres.
In 2003, he founded ‘Akhali Teatri’ (New Theatre). The new theatre's first production was ‘Strange theatre’s world’, based on French playwright Marcel Mithois’ story. In 2004, he was awarded the prize of ‘Best Director of the Year’ for the production ‘Strange theatre’s world’ and a special prize for establishing a new space for theatre.
In 2006, after finishing his MA studies, Irakli Gogia started working as General Manager and Art Director of Shalva Dadiani Zugdidi State Drama Theatre. He directed more than 10 performances at this theatre.
Currently, he holds the position of Artistic Director at Sandro Akhmeteli Tbilisi State Drama Theatre.[1]
Irakli Gogia is involved in various artistic projects and conducts theoretical research as a PhD Candidate in European Theatre Education. He also conducts research in general psychology and in the theories of Noussphaira. He is also involved in projects related to non-violence and conflict resolution. In 2014, he was one of the organizers of the International Peace Camp (Georgia).
Irakli Gogia is a lecturer in Introduction to Direction in the Department of Science and Art at Ilia State University.
In 2012, together with his young colleagues, Irakli Gogia co-founded the ‘Modern Georgian Theatre Research Center’.[2] The centre focuses on research and international collaborative projects.
Irakli Gogia is a member of IETM (International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts),[3] since 2009, and IUTA (International University Theatre Association),[4] since 2012.
In 2015, together with his Estonian colleagues, Irakli Gogia co-founded the 'Estonian Georgian Art Center'.[5] The centre focuses on international collaborative projects.
