Mirembe Irene professionally known as Irene Kayemba (Born 21 November 1980) is a Ugandan singer, songwriter, and performer. She sings in the Afro-beat genre with traditional Ugandan band music.

Early life and education

Irene Kayemba is the daughter of the late Jackson Willington Ssentamu and the late Margret Nalunkuuma in Kanoni, Ggomba district in Uganda. She is a sister to Mikie Wine, Dax Vybes, Bobi Wine,[1] Banjoman, and Nyanzi Ssentamu. Irene grew up in the ghetto areas of Kamwokya in Kampala. She started her elementary education at Kanoni C/U primary school, and completed her primary leaving examinations at Bukalagi primary school.

Irene later joined Ahamadia muslim school in Wandegeya where she completed her Uganda Certificate of Education. She later joined Namagabi muslim high school where she completed her Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education. In 2000, Irene joined Makerere university and completed a diploma in performing arts.

In 2005, she joined The Chattered Institute of Marketing in London and became a marketer by profession.[2][3]

Career

Kayemba begun her musical journey as a backup vocalist before launching her solo musical career. She is signed under the Kibz management, a music record label that she has been a member since 2020.

Kayemba gained musical attention in 2018 with her single titled Better Country. In 2019, she released a new song titled Property produced by Nessim.[4][5] In 2020, Irene Kayemba launched her maiden online concert dubbed Woman.[6][7] Since then, she has released various music albums, extended playlists, and singles.[8]

In 2023, Irene Kayemba signed as the brand ambassador for Bidco Uganda Limited.[9][10] She has since then worked with different companies , including MTN Uganda, Uganda Telcom, Azam TV, and StarTimes as a brand influencer and corporate marketer.[11][12]

Awards and nominations

In 2021, Kayemba's Kankinemu song won the Hipipo Awards as Best Eastern song of the year.[13] In the same year, she also won the Best inspirational song of the year for her song We Shall Overcome in the accolades organized by New Vision Group.[14]

Philanthropy

In 2012, Irene Kayemba started Groom a girl foundation which aimed at helping vulnerable girls and young women in Uganda. In 2023, she conducted charity activities in schools of Lira district, Wakiso and Kalangala district.[17] In 2024, Irene started the mother to mother campaign where she donated hospital equipment to pregnant mothers in Mulago National Specialised Hospital[18], sanitary pads to girls and counselling sessions in different schools in Uganda.[19][20] In 2025, Irene changed the foundation name to Groom a Soul Foundation, she uses her social networking platforms to advocate for the common youth.[21] She has often stated that the name change was intended to remove limitations, ensuring that any child, regardless of gender receives and suits her charity.[22]

Personal life

Irene is married to Kayemba Abdul and the couple has eight children together. Her husband is currently her music career manager under Kibz management record label.[23]
