The Irish Rowing Archives is a not for profit online archive to preserve material related to Irish rowing.

History

The Archives were founded in 2013 with the stated objective to be "an archive to identify, preserve and share materials that record the values, culture and history of rowing in Ireland." The initial objective of the project was to scan regatta programmes which contain information about crews which have participated in the past. Over time the collection of regatta programmes has grown to in excess of 2,500 programmes from every regatta in Ireland, some dating back to the nineteenth century.[2]

Development

The archive uses its own website to display the material it has collected. It also uses Facebook and Instagram accounts to regularly share material and interact with the rowing community. Over time, more material was shared with it either by past rowers or the families of former rowers. Such material is accepted either as a donation or sometimes as a loan so the material can be scanned or photographed before being returned.

The Archives also keep records of all championship winners back to the first championship race in 1912. In addition records of all participation by Irish crews since the first Irish crew at the 1948 Olympic Regatta are maintained.

The Archives are used as a resource for regatta commentators or for those composing articles or books. In 2015 it was featured in Hear the Boat Sing, a rowing archive website [3] and also in the 2019 edition of Irish Archives, the Journal of the Irish Society for Archives.[4][not in citation given]
