Ironlights is a virtual reality dueling game with skillful, fluid melee combat developed by E McNeill. [1] This game takes place in a futuristic open multiplayer arena environment, with action-packed slow-motion duels in either single-player campaign mode, or interactive multi-player mode. [2]The game was crowdfunded on Kickstarter, adding more than 500 backers and $21,000 USD to the development, allowing backers to perform early beta tests of the game. [3]The game was fully released on April 9, 2020 with support for Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest and SteamVR.

Gameplay

The player uses their controllers to wield a variety of weapons, and master their play-styles. This game is modeled after a slow-motion action melee combat scene, and players must utilize skill in order to strike the opponent in the most strategic way. The slow-motion mechanic is what this game is based on. Players take turns attacking and defending, and must strategically trade energy for vulnerability at the right time. Weapons shatter on impact, so in combat you must essentially “reload” the weapon behind your back in a fluid manner. Different classes have different ranged attacks, from arrows to bullets. The game has a plethora of classes to choose from, including Reaper, Knight, Duelist, Samurai, Crusader, Monk, and Ninja. Each of these classes has a single-player campaign, that aids your journey to master melee combat. You can climb up the ranks from Bronze to Gold, and earn coins to customize your appearance. At the click of a button, players can enter a vast arena, and engage in real-time combat with other players. Players climb up the multiplayer rank, from Bronze I all the way to Champion.

Release

[4]The game was first released in early access on February 14, 2020 for Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift. It was officially released on April 9, 2020 for Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift and SteamVR.

The Scythe Update arrived on July 19, 2020, becoming the fifth class in the Ironlights game. This update included major and minor bugfixes, as well as a voice chat, new cosmetics, and a GIF Export Feature.

The Katana Update arrived on September 24, 2020, becoming the sixth class in the game. This update brought major and minor bugfixes, new cosmetics, and a brand-new “handheld” GIF recording system. It also added an injury system in combat.

Ironlights is a game based on melee combat, and contains six weapons to choose from. These include the Katana (Samurai), Scythe (Reaper), Flail & Shield (Crusader), Rapier & Buckler (Duelist), Greatsword (Knight), Bō Staff (Monk), and Dual Katars (Ninja).

Duelist

A flashy and nimble fighter with a swift, sharp sword: equipped with a light rapier and a small buckler, the Duelist may seem like an underdog at first. But don’t be fooled, this rogue is full of tricks, and no one is quicker with a blade. -E McNeill. The Duelist is the fastest sword class in Ironlights, and the rapier can be manipulated in an infinite number of ways. The more strikes the buckler intercepts, the smaller it becomes. For the ranged attack, the Duelist sends forward a barrage of accurate projectiles, guided by an aim line. The play difficulty is rated: Easy.

Knight

A powerful warrior with a massive two-handed sword: A Skilled Knight can be an unstoppable force. Although the Knight’s massive claymore is tricky to handle, it’s especially difficult for enemies to block. Who needs finesse when you have a sword like this?” -E McNeill. The Knight is the slowest class in the game, however it deals near the most damage. Unlike one hitbox like many other classes, the Knight has two adjacent hitboxes. The Knight sends forward a line of sharp projectiles, following the angle of the slash. The play difficulty is rated: Hard.

Ninja

A deadly, agile assassin with a blade in each hand: The Ninja carries twin katars, each of them small, sharp, and quick. Wielding two weapons at once, the Ninja has the flexibility to defend against any attack, following up with a flurry of blows that’s nearly impossible to block” - E McNeill. The Ninja is the most agile class in Ironlights, and despite the katars’ small size, they can deal a large amount of damage. The Ninja shoots forward a large number of bullets, and can energize the bullets to increase speed and damage. The play difficulty is rated: Easy.

Crusader

A faithful shield for defense and a zealous flail for attack: The Crusader’s flail may seem cumbersome, but it can move with terrifying speed and force in the hands of a capable warrior. On defense, the flail is less useful, but the Crusader’s sturdy shield makes up for it” - E McNeill. The Crusader’s speed all depends on the player's skill. The more strikes the shield absorbs, the smaller it becomes. The Crusader’s ranged attack sends out a multitude of homing projectiles, that take note of the player's position. The play difficulty is rated: Normal.

Monk

“A master of martial arts wielding a fearsome staff: a simple staff becomes a deadly weapon in the hands of an expert Monk. Although famous for precision and skill, this master of martial arts transforms into a spinning blur of danger in the heat of battle” - E McNeill The Monk is a very quick class in the hands of a gifted fighter. On defense, it has a hitbox on both sides, as well as one in the middle. The Monk’s ranged attack turns the Bō Staff into an actual bow. It shoots out accurate, high-damage arrows that can serve as a quick distraction, or even a main attack. The play difficulty is rated: Normal.

Reaper

A grim heavy scythe that cuts through any defense: the Reaper’s scythe is weighty, but swift. In the right hands, it is almost impossible to evade. But this is not a weapon built for defense. A shield is mounted near the handle, but it can only take so much punishment before it breaks”-E McNeill. The Reaper is one of the most respected classes in the game. It can deal a lot of damage, but only in the right hands. On defense, the Reaper has iron bars on its handle that shrink the more damage it takes. The Reaper’s ranged attack sends a beacon to where you want it, which emits a projectile wave at your command. The play difficulty is rated: Hard.

Samurai

“A trained warrior wielding a sharp, elegant katana: the Samurai’s blade is legendarily swift, excelling on offense with sudden, sure attacks that can cut through the thickest armor. However, on defense, only the reinforced base of the sword can withstand repeated blocks”- E McNeill. The Samurai was the second class to be added in the game after launch, and is a hybrid of many classes. It has the Duelist’s speed, the Knight’s two-handed element, and the Reaper/Knight’s ranged attack. The ranged attack sends forward waves of projectiles that follow the cuts and slashes of your sword. They launch six seconds after planted, however may be sent forward with the release of the blade. The play difficulty is rated: Medium.
