Irreligion in Jordan is legally impossible, with atheists and agnostics forced to associate themselves with a recognized religion for purposes of official identification.[1] There is no official data on the number of practicing irreligious people in Jordan, but estimates range from a few hundred to a few thousand. This is because many irreligious people keep their beliefs private for fear of social reprisal.
Apostasy, or the act of leaving Islam, is not explicitly illegal in Jordan, but it is considered a grave sin by many Muslims. There have been cases of people being ostracized, threatened, or even attacked by their families or communities after leaving Islam.[2]
Despite the challenges, there is a growing irreligious movement in Jordan. This is due to a number of factors, including the increasing availability of information and the rise of social media.[3]
