Isaac Ridler was an American beachcomber and an early European resident of the Hawaiian Islands, often described as a "beachcomber" a term for sailors who left their ships to live among islanders[2]. He was the carpenter's mate on the American ship Columbia Rediviva and was left in Hawaii in the fall of 1788 to collect sandalwood.[3][4] Ridler played a critical role in the early contact period between Hawaiians and Westerners. In 1790, he helped nurse Isaac Davis, the sole survivor of the Fair American massacre, back to health[5]. Along with John Young, he was a key advisor to King Kamehameha I during the unification of the islands[6], though he eventually left for China and then New England in 1791. Ridler's later life and death in America remain undocumented in major historical records.[7]
