Isabelle Clement
Isabelle Clement is a charity Director in London. She was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in June 2018 for her services to charity.[1] and as Director of the inclusive cycling charity Wheels for Wellbeing she is noted for her work leading on widening access and participation in cycling for those with a disability.
Early Life and Career[edit]
A spinal tumour in childhood left Isabelle with mobility issues and she started using a wheelchair in her 20s. Although she'd tried cycling as a child, it was only once her son started cycling that she considered returning to it[2], purchasing a hand-cycle attachment for her wheelchair.
Inclusive Cycle Campaigning[edit]
Isabelle joined Wheels for Wellbeing in 2006, working on the governance documents for the newly formed charity[3]. In 2012 Wheels for Wellbeing was voted into the finals of the National Lottery Awards, finishing top in its category[4]. Though it was ultimately unsuccessful in the Lottery Awards, the following year the charity won The Guardian's Charity Awards (2013)[5].
During the 2016 London Mayoral elections, Clement became a more prominent voice in the campaigns, calling on the newly elected Mayor to improve cycling infrastructure in recognition of the needs of the capital's disabled cyclists[6]. This was followed by the Charity publishing the results of the first national survey of disabled cyclists[7]. She is currently a member of the London Cycling Campaign's elected policy forum[8] and speaker at events on inclusive, sustainable mobilities.
Publications[edit]
Isabelle Clement is one of the co-authors of 2018's Invisible cyclists? Disabled people and cycle planning – A case study of London[9], a report analysing text and images from over 50 London transport documents, and which found that few official strategy documents mentioned disabled cyclists. Her short story, 'Wheels of Fortune' for the podcast audio narrative project, 100 Voices for 100 Years[10] and was featured in the 1000 Londoners Chocolate Films project[11]
