Isamu Hirabayashi
Isamu Hirabayashi is a Japanese director best known for his films *Babin* 2008, *Shimajiro and Fufu's Big Adventure* 2013, *Shimajiro and the Whale's Song* 2014, *Shimajiro and the Mother Tree* 2015, *Shimajiro in Bookland* 2016, *Little Shimajiro* 2016, *Shimajiro and the Rainbow Oasis* 2017.
Biography
Isamu Hirabayashi was born on June 25, 1972, in Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. He was born into a family of precious metal craftsmen of three generations as the second of three sons.
Hirabayashi learned advertisement and graphic design at Musashino Art University, where he met his best friend, the painter Tetsuya Ishida (1973-2005). Hirabayashi and Ishida together entered the Mainichi Advertisement Design Award and were awarded with outstanding performance and honorable mention.
After graduating college, Hirabayashi started working for Light Publicity, a top advertising design agency in Japan. At Light Publicity, he worked on newspaper and magazine advertisement projects as an art director. Upon leaving Light Publicity, Hirabayashi started working as an independent film director. He went on to stage and produce TV commercials for various prestigious industries in Japan.
In 2008 he made a short film *Babin* which was nominated at the Locarno International Film Festival, and this was the first time Hirabayashi’s works were screened at a major international film festival. *Babin* 2008 received two awards at this festival.
