Ishrat Akther from Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir is a multi-faceted personality. She is an international wheelchair basketball player, a motivational speaker, Kashmir’s young leader and an achiever’s award-winner. Indeed, six years ago, Ishrat’s life had no meaning — but an incident changed it all.

Early life

Ishrat Akhter, a 24-year-old from Kashmir’s Baramulla district, is the state’s first international wheelchair basketball player. The athlete who represented India at the Asia-Oceania Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Thailand (a Tokyo 2020 Paralympics qualifier) is training hard to get a gold medal at the event that is now slated for July 23 to August 8, 2021.

Career

As India prepares to host an international wheelchair basketball tournament for the first time in New Delhi in November, Kashmir has found a reason to rejoice. Two members of the 12-member Indian women's squad are from here - Ishrat Akhter from Baramulla and Insha Bashir from Budgam. They were picked for the team through selection trials organised by the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council. For the two superwomen, being selected to the Indian team for the WBFI and ICRC International Tournament makes up for years of self-doubt.
