Isis Agora Lovecruft

Isis Agora Lovecruft is an American computer security and cryptography researcher. They are known for speaking publicly against sexual harassment and sexism in tech.[1] They initially studied theoretical physics and English literature, the latter with a specialization in Feminist Critical Theory, before turning to cryptography.

Sexual abuse whistleblower[edit]
On the 4th of June 2016, a website appeared with anonymous accounts of mistreatment by Jacob Appelbaum, core member of the Tor project at the time.[2] On 15 June, Alison Macrina (the director of the Library Freedom Project) and Lovecruft publicly announced that the website's anonymous accounts of sexual abuse, under the pseudonyms of "Sam" and "Forest," respectively, were their own.[3]
In 2019, Peter Todd, a former bitcoin for developer sued Lovecruft for defamation, after they publicly accused Todd of rape and harassment in a series of tweets, in support of a Jane Doe who accused Todd of rape.[4] The later called Jacob Appelbaum as a character witness, and Nadim Kobeissi also provided a deposition in support. The case was struck down as a SLAPP.[5]
Research and contributions[edit]
Between 2009 and 2012, and again in 2018, they worked for Signal,[6] working on multi-party secure communication by doing research on Menezes–Qu–Vanstone and mpOTR,[7] as well as on mobilecoin.[8]
They were a core developer in the Tor project between 2010 and 2018. During this time, they worked on Rust integration,[9] bridges distribution,[10] post-quantum cryptography.[11] and OONI.
They are also lead developer and maintainer of dalek cryptography, a pure-rust elliptic curve cryptography toolkit, used by various projects[12] like libp2p, Signal, Solana,[13][14] resulting in an RFC for two new primer-order groups.[15]
Personal life[edit]
In 2016, Lovecruft has accused the FBI of harassment, and moved to Berlin to avoid being served a subpoena.[16][8] They are also a close friend of Chelsea Manning.[17]
