Islander Middle School (IMS) is a public middle school located in Mercer Island, Washington as part of the Mercer Island School District
As of the 2025-2026 school year, the school had an enrollment of 938 students and 45.83 classroom teachers (on a FTE basis) for a student-teacher ratio of 20.47. 70 students were eligible for free lunch and 0 eligible for reduced-cost lunch.[2]
In the 2024/2025 school year, IMS adopted a phone free school policy enforced by magnetically locking Yondr pouches. This policy includes all cellular devices such as smartwatches, phones, and wireless earbuds.
Academics
Islander Middle School’s students are mostly proficient in math and reading standards for the state.[4]74% of students tested proficient in math, and 80% tested proficient in reading between 2021 and 2024. On average students at IMS are less proficient at math and reading then other students in the district, but are significantly more proficient than the average student in the Washington State.
Athletics
Islander Middle School has a very strong athletic program, yielding dominant results from the past few years in the three major sports. IMS competes in the triangle league, with the other schools being Tolt MS, Snoqualmie MS, Chief Kanim MS, and Twin Falls MS.
Track & Field
Islander Middle School’s track and field team competes in the Triangle League and offers a wide range of running, relay, and field events. The team typically practices during the spring season and competes in sprints and distance races, including the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 1600 meters, as well as hurdles and the medley. Field events include discus, shot put, long jump, and high jump, with relay events such as the 4×100 and 4×200. IMS' track and field team has been a dominant program in its league, consistently finishing among the top teams in competition.
Wrestling
Islander Middle School has been the dominant force in Triangle league wrestling since 2023. After losing every single meet in 2022 during the Covid-19 era, the wrestling team came back and has not lost a meet for 3 years in a row, claiming the championship each time.[5][6]
