Isra Elsalihie
Isra Elsalihie is an Iraqi- Swedish actor and writer known for her critically acclaimed work in the west coast premiere of Noura by Heather Raffo.
Early life[edit]
Elsalihie was born in Gothenburg, Sweden to Iraqi parents. Raised in Gothenburg, Sweden, Elsalihie attended Hvitfeldtska high school, where she chose to specialize in Nature Science at the English department, having her high school education conducted in English. She went on to study medicine at Gothenburg University and later English literature at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England before moving to New York to enroll at Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[1]
Upon her graduation, Isra began working at the Actors Studio under executive director Deborah Dixon.
Career[edit]
Elsalihie made her acting debut in 2016 with the short film Another Girl by award-winning director Austin Kase in which she had the supportive role of Chelsea. Another Girl has been screened at 15 film festivals around the U.S. and won awards for best short and best lead actor.
In 2017, Elsalihie starred in The Invaders. The Invaders went on to screen at London film festival 2018 and an additional 30 film festivals in the U.S. and internationally. The Invaders have also received 10 nominations including for Best Lead Actress and a win for Best Horror at SSIFF.
In 2019, Elsalihie performed at the prestigious Old Globe Theatre production of Noura [1] in the role of Maryam. Noura was directed by Johanna McKeon and written by Heather Raffo. Their West Coast premiere of Noura [2] opened on September 20th, 2019 and quickly received rave reviews [3].
Elsalihie was a recipient of the 24 Hour Plays: Nationals 2017 [4] and was later a judge in the selection panel for 2020 round of participants for 24 Hour Plays: Nationals 2020.
Elsalihie was nominated for and subsequently became a member of LAByrinth Theater Company's Summer Intensive Ensemble 2019 [5]. Isra has since collaborated with LAByrinth company’s Barn series at the Off-Broadway Cherry Lane Theatre.
Elsalihie's noted theatre work includes Anne Frank in the Gaza Strip, directed by Shaun Peknic, for which she won Outstanding Supporting Actress at the Planet Connections gala 2017 alongside academy award nominee Chazz Palminteri. Elsalihie also performed in Parisian Blues Fantasie, produced by Tony Award winner Mercedes Ellington at the Friars Club, and Red Ballon Directed by Jessica Blank at Lark theatre as a part of 48 Forum Festival 2018 produced by New York’s premier middle eastern theater company, Noor Theatre Company [6].
