Itirani Samanta (born 1970) is an Indian writer, film producer, editor, and journalist. She produced national film award-winning movie Kathantara in 2005. She is the editor of the monthly family magazine of Odisha, The Kadambini, and the children's magazine The Kunikatha.[1]

Samanta received the National Film Award for Best Film production in 2005 and the Odisha State Film Awards 2014 award for best story writer.[2]

Early life and education

Dr. Itirani Samanta was born in 1970 in the village of Kalarabanka, Cuttack, Odisha. She is the youngest of seven siblings, born to Nilimarani Samanta and Anadi Charan Samanta. Having lost her father early and lacking adequate financial support, Dr. Samanta's early childhood was marked by relentless struggle for survival. She was raised by her mother amidst poverty and social challenges. However, her determination and passion for education sustained her through these difficult times.

Dr. Samanta received her primary education in Kalarabanka and later moved to Cuttack to complete her high school. After completing her +2 science education at Ramadevi Women’s College, Bhubaneswar, she enrolled in Electronics & Telecommunication engineering in Bhubaneswar to help support her family. Despite this, her strong desire to write led her to pursue a postgraduate degree in Odia Literature and a Master's degree in Mass Communication and Advanced Journalism from Utkal University, Odisha. Later, she earned her Ph.D in Literature from Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan, and received a fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Career

Samanta began her career as an author, publishing her first book, 'Tathaapi' (a collection of short stories), in 2001. To date, she has authored 20 books. Her books have garnered critical acclaim and reader appreciation.

Samanta founded Kadambini Media Pvt. Ltd. in 2000 and launched the premier monthly family magazine of Odisha, The Kadambini. She also launched the children's magazine Kunikatha under this media company. Dr. Samanta currently serves as editor of both magazines.[3] [4]

Filmography

Samanta's debut as a producer and scriptwriter was with the film Kathantara (2005), [5] a film set against the backdrop of the 1999 Odisha cyclone. Kathantara won eight awards at the 18th Odisha State Film Awards (2005) and the Silver Lotus for Best Odia Feature Film in 2006 at the 53rd National Film Awards.[6] She also produced and wrote her second feature film, Krantidhara (2014), a film based on the struggles of women in grassroots politics. This film received critical acclaim and was showcased at various national and international film festivals, winning 3 awards at the Odisha State Film Awards (2014).[7]

Samanta produced a short film, Kahani Nuhen (2013), which was awarded Best Short Film at the 1st Odisha State Tele-Film Award, presented by the Culture Department of the Government of Odisha.[8][9][10] She also produced and directed two educational films ("Chithhi" and "Kanyaaratna") and the telefilm "Taapoi", as well as a play, "Kaanta-Kaantaa". She also produced several documentary promotional films for the Government of Odisha, such as "Ballav Speaks."

Philanthropy and journalism

Samanta is the Secretary of the Nilimarani Memorial Charitable Trust, named after her mother. She has initiated efforts to develop her native village, Kalarabanka, into a model village since 2006. She currently manages two schools, Kalinga English Medium School and Kalarabanka High School, and has motivated local youth to participate in village development and cultural activities. [11]

In 2017, she worked as a journalist for Kadambini to promote social acceptance of the transgender community, publishing a 150-page report on the issue. She also launched a special program, "Bhinna Manisha Bhinna Katha," on Kalinga TV since July 2, 2018, through her media house, Kadambini Media.[12][13]
