Plot Summary[edit]
On a stormy night a 19-year-old boy is stabbed. Unable to get help, he slides into an overflowing manhole. Balasaraswathi, a traditional Brahmin widow, searches for her son Venu in that storm. Approaches Police for help and returns home worried. On the following day the police show her the dead body of her son. Later they reveal the cause of death as murder.
Investigations start, the mother affirms no possible preexistent disputes that could result in a killing. She says that his world is she and her world is he. Police could not trace the killer as the motive of the killing is unknown. The widow who was committed to four walls, couldn't bear the trauma and her visits to the police station to know the motive of the killer go futile. A crime reporter feels pity on her for being reprimanded by the SI owing to frequent visits to the station, the crime reporter tries to make her understand that the police system in this country semi-functional and she would be wasting her time by asking them to help her. Balsaraswathi witnesses a young man with a baby in his arms, his wife being arrested alongside other protesters for the cause of a rape victim. She recognizes the man as Satyam and his wife arguing with a goonda political leader. in that commotion, Balsaraswathi finds a book - "My Experiments with Truth" by Mahatma Gandhi. She starts reading it and by the time she finishes it she experiences a strong desire to fight for the truth.
Balasaraswathi approaches the crime reporter with an idea of modern/digital satyagraha. She proposes to write letters to the murderer(s) explaining her pain and anguish through which she believes she can melt his/their hearts and make him/them to confess the crime. After initial rejection from a publishing house, Balasaraswathi's letters are published through another publishing house. The letters of Balasaraswathi soon becomes a talk of the town and starts to garner attention from wide range of public. An orphan named Raju shows peculiar interest in these letters. The pressure on the police department to solve Venugopal's case increases as the popularity of Balasaraswathi rises in the public.
The SI tries to persuade Balasaraswathi out of writing letters to the public but she is adamant on continuing her satyagraha until she finds what she is looking for. Out of frustration, the police arrests a bunch of kids from the low-lying areas out of suspicion and beats them to pulp in order to extract some information from any of them. Raju is one among them. Raju listens Balasarawathi talking for the first time on the television set in the police station. Also the latest letter of Balasaraswathi which is read out loud by a constable in the police station hits him hard. Her voice lingers in his head even after being released. So, he decides to call her. But as soon as she speaks to him he goes dumbfounded and this makes Balasaraswathi that it was the killer who called him.
Balsaraswathi informs this to the police but they refuse to pay heed to her words. Balasaraswathi writes another letter addressing to the caller and calls him out as a coward who can face his deeds. Enraged by her calling him a coward, Raju calls her and confesses his crime. He says that it was him who killed her son and there was no particular reason to kill him. Balasaraswathi again asks the help of police where she is heckled by the SI. At the police station, Balasaraswathi overhears that some goons have attacked Satyam's shop and police department has been unofficially informed to be dormant. Later she discovers that the attack on Satyam's shop has claimed his life and finds the SI lying to the public by making an official statement as - "Satyam died in an accidental cylinder blast".
Balasaraswathi gives up all hopes on the system. Meanwhile, Raju is very disturbed after confessing his crime and roams all around the city like a nomad. The emotional distress and an high fever takes a toll on Raju's health and he decides to confront Balasaraswathi. He visits Balasaraswathi's flat but before he could say anything he falls unconscious. Balasaraswathi doubts him to be the killer who earlier confessed to her on the call. Yet she cares for him and help him recover from fever. After recovering, Raju pleads her forgiveness. Raju confesses that he is an orphan and does comprehend the concept of love and that he has been hardened by the society. He informs her that hunger is the only emotion he can feel. That rainy day, Venugopal came across Raju and Raju demanded money from him as he was starving terribly. Venugopal doesn't comply and tries to escape. During the tussle, Raju stabs Venugopal and leaves him on the road to die. Both Balasaraswathi and Raju cry their hearts out.
In her last letter, she writes to her audience that she too is responsible for her son's death as it is the responsibility of the society to spread love to each human being and as a society we have failed to do our jobs. Lack of love creates apathy in children like Raju which in turn motivates them to take the path of crime. Later she turns to be an activist and leads a mass protest demanding justice for Satyam.
