Ivan Balabanov
Ivan Balabanov
Ivan Balabanov is a Bulgarian-American dog trainer known for his contributions to competitive dog sports, particularly Schutzhund/IPO (now IGP), and for founding the training methodology known as Training Without Conflict. [1][2][3]
He is a two-time IGP world champion and has represented the United States in multiple international competitions which has made him widely regarded as one of the most accomplished sport dog trainers in the world.[2][4][5][6]
Life and Career
Balabanov was born in Sofia, Bulgaria but eventually moved to the United States to pursue a career training dogs.[4] He first worked as a guide dog instructor before moving on to work at the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). [4][7]
Balabanov gained international recognition through his achievements in the dog sport of Schutzhund/IPO. He has represented the United States multiple times at the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and FMBB world championships.[8] In 2007 Ivan won both the FCI IGP World Championship and FMBB IGP World Championship with his dog Qenny Ot Vitosha.[4][8] He is best known for his work with Belgian Malinois, the breed he competes with.
In addition to his competitive success, Ivan authored the book Advanced Schutzhund which focuses on his approach to working dog training. [9][10] He is also the founder of Training Without Conflict, a proprietary dog training system focused on clear communication, motivation, and minimizing conflict between handler and dog. [11][12]
Ivan also founded and served as the former president of the American Working Malinois Association (AWMA).[13] In 2024 Ivan assisted in a study carried out by Anamarie C Johnson and Clive Wynne titled Comparison of the Efficacy and Welfare of Different Training Methods in Stopping Chasing Behavior in Dogs. [14]
He is the owner of Ot Vitosha Malinois, a kennel known for producing high-performance working dogs. [15]
