Ivan Baran (Zagreb, November 16, 1996 ) is a Croatian writer. He is the author of epic fantasy tetralogy The Black Books Cycle and the philosophical novels Samuel Gide, Monsieur August and The Great Fall. He lives and writes in Vukovar, Croatia.
Early years
Ivan Baran was born on the November 16, 1996, in Zagreb, Croatia, as one of three sons of Ivan and Hana. His father was a veteran of Croatian war of independence and a prisoner of war of Sremska Mitrovica prison in Serbia.[1] His parents divorced in 1999, after which Baran, along with his two brothers, spent 4 and a half years in two orphanages, whom he left as a 7-year old.[2] He has lived in Vukovar since 2005, with his father, until the latter has passed away.[3]
Career
Baran began writing his debut novel, titled Enzolart, in the summer of 2009, as a twelve-year-old.[4][5][6] He has finished writing it in 2012, the same year his father has died.[7]
As a fifteen-year-old in 2012 and thru 2013, Baran edited the book Enzolart and prepared it for publishing. In the spring of 2014, Enzolart was published as the book one of the epic fantasy series named The Black Books Cycle (Ciklus Crnih Knjiga).[8]
Book two of The Black Books Cycle, titled Mord Dur'agemski, was published as an e-book in two parts, Mord Dur'agemski, Part One in 2015. and Mord Dur'agemski, Part Two, in 2016.[9]
In 2018. Baran has published his first philosophical novel, titled Samuel Gide. Samuel Gide was in the semi-finals of the VBZ competition for the best unpublished novel for the year 2017.[10]
The works Mord Dur'agemski, Part One and Mord Dur'agemski, Part Two were published in print in 2019.[11] That same year, Baran served as an editor of the book The Second Derivation (Druga derivacija) by Croatian author Kristijan Mirić.[12] Likewise in 2019, an excerpt from Samuel Gide was published in the 14. vukovarski zbornik Matice Hrvatske, anthology book in publication of the Matica Hrvatska.[13]
In 2021, Baran has published Darkness of Hil'gum (Tame Hil'guma)[14], book three of The Black Books Cycle, and his second philosophical novel, Monsieur August.[15] That same year, he was a subject of the documentary film Good Spirits of Vukovar (Dobri duhovi Vukovara, 2021).[16]
His seventh book, a philosophical novel The Great Fall (Veliki pad) was published in 2024.[17]
Literary influence
Among fantasy authors, Baran has cited Tolkien, Williams, Pullman, Abercrombie, Pyle, and Paolini as some of his influences. However, Baran has noted that he stopped reading fantasy with the publication of Enzolart, after which he only read classics and philosophical books.[18]
Baran epic fantasy is characterized by deep character introspection and psychological realism, while his philosophical novels often dwell into existentialism, structuralism, avant-garde and questions of identity. Some influence on his characters psychological development came from many veterans he grew up around in his hometown of Vukovar, who were involved in the Battle of Vukovar.[19]
Among the authors of classics, in various interviews Baran has cited Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gide, Voltaire, Proust, and Krleža as his influences.[20] The aforementioned authors are also somewhat reflected in Baran's writing style. He has also cited Nietzsche, Kant, and Schopenhauer as influences.[21]
Baran has attributed industrial designer Jacque Fresco as having had the greatest influence on his worldview.[22] In his books, Baran sometimes leaves homages. He has left homage to Nietzsche and Dostoevsky in the novel The Great Fall, and to Fresco in Monsieur August.
Private life
Baran lives alone, in Vukovar, in relative isolation. He has stated that he writes for about 6 hours a day.[23] In some of his interviews, he claimed to have never tried cigarettes or alcohol in his life, but he does drink coffee.[24]
He is an atheist, humanist and cosmopolitan. In contrast to that, he has nonetheless expressed that he regards religion in high esteem, having been influenced by the Bible, the Book of Mormon, Quran and Pali Canon among others.[25] He is an autodidact.[26]
