Ivan Benchev is a Bulgarian opera singer (bass). He is often compared with the great bass Boris Christoff.

Biography

He was born in Sofia, Bulgaria on 1 November 1948, into a family of opera singers. As a child, he had the honor to perform on stage with some of the greatest Bulgarian singers like Boris Christoff, Elena Nikolai, and Todor Mazarov.

After winning a competition for opera singers in GDR, he moved to live first in Magdeburg and then in Vienna. He has 5 studio albums featuring Russian songs, Church music, and others. His recordings can be found in the "Giuseppe Verdi" Academy in Milan and the house of "Giuseppe Verdi".

Dance and choreography

Ivan Benchev is also a choreographer, specializing in jazz ballet. Between 1980 and 1991 he created 30 ballets and adapted three world-famous musicals – "Cats", "West Side Story", and "Hair" – into ballets. He was choreographer of the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Army, and after its closure, he became a soloist of the Ensemble.[1]

As a journalist and TV presenter

From 1989 to 1999, Ivan was a presenter of two music shows on radio "Bulgaria" – Bulgarian National Radio. These shows were listened to by hundreds of people in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, the USA, and Western Europe. He also hosted one show on TV "7 days".[2]

As a writer

He is the author of 3 opera books: "The bitter cup of success" about world-famous singer Elena Nikolai, "The faith of the artist" about the great tenor Todor Mazarov – the new Caruso, and "An instant against the backdrop of eternity" – dedicated to the centennial of Sofia National Opera and Ballet and the Bulgarian opera choir. His books can be found in "La Scala", Milan, and Wiener Staatsoper.

Charity

Ivan performs charity concerts for the recovery of the Opera in Stara Zagora, also for the victims of the earthquake in Armenia, and many concerts for children with mental disabilities.

Awards

"Golden Lyre" – the biggest Bulgarian prize for singing.

"The Golden medal" for singing mastery at the world church festival in Loreto – Italy.
