Ivan Jovanović "Crni" (Šurmanci 1902. - Mostar 1958. ) was peasant from village of Šurmanci and also one of greatest war criminals ih WW2 in Bosnia.[1]

Private life[edit]

Ivan jovanović was born in Šurmanci near Međugorje. His father was Jakov , peasant and mother Luce (born Karačić). His brother ludvig also become war criminal. Jovanović was married and father of nine.

Crime against people of Prebilovci[edit]

After establishment of croatian puppet state in 1941. in Čapljina came Franjo Vego , student from Zagreb and member of Ustasha movement . In effort to promote ultranationalist ustasha ideology , Vego decided to organize pogrom against local Serb people (who lived on opposite , eastern bank of Neretva river) . As most of people from Čapljina refused to collaborate in crime [2], Vego decided to collect group of local criminals , psychopaths and gipsies [2]to commit killings . After contacting village chief of Šurmanci , Vego found Jovanović , who become leader of killing squad . Another noted killers were Ludvig Jovanović and Andrija Buljan . Then he released talk that men from Prebilovci would be arrested and transported to work in Germany . to avoid capture , men from Prebilovci hide in nearby Hutovo Blato swamp . With almost all able bodied man absent , ustashas had no difficulties to arrest all women and children from Prebilovci , and transport them to Šurmanci where they were killed by Jovanović's group and throwed (some of them still alive) in Golubinka cave. Only 172 people from Prebilovci survived war , of them only 4 women under 45 and one child . Bones were exhumed in 1990.[3] and buried near church in Prebilovci , but grave together with mortal reamains of victims were destroyed by HVO and HOS forces in 1992.

End of war and life in hiding[edit]

At end of war jovanović escaped from Hercegovina and tried to flee to austria but was captured and mobilised to Jugoslav partisan army (his crimes were unknown to communist leadership). His brother Ludvig also joined partisans and become communist leader in Šurmanci and tried to destroy evidence of crime . Ivan Jovanović instead of returning to Herzegovina , settled in Serbia and lived on farm of Dulić family (father of former serb politician Ivana Dulić Marković) before his crimes were discovered. Jovanović was arrested in 1957. , tried together with other perpetrators of crime and sentenced to death and executed.
