Ivan Valeryevich Montik (Russian: Иван Валерьевич Монтик, born January 29, 1982, in Minsk, Belarus) is a Belarusian human rights and free election activist, journalist, founder of Softswiss. He supported free and fair elections in Belarus at the parliamentary elections in 2004 and 2008 and presidential elections in 2006, providing observers assistance in logistics and translation to OSCE. In 2009, Montik signed together with 48 editors-in-chief and leading European journalists the European Charter on Freedom of the Press. In 2011, he co-founded the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) in Leipzig, Germany.[1]
Biography
Ivan Valeryevich Montik was born in Minsk, Belarus, in a family of teachers of history and geography.[2] In 2000, he entered the Belarusian State University, where he initially studied at the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science.[3] Later, Montik switched to the Department of International Management (Faculty of Economics). In 2005, he received a MBA.[4]
In 2002, together with a school friend, he opened a hand car wash, which he sold in two years.[5] From 2007 to 2010, he headed the representative office in Belarus of the Ukrainian media portal, Bigmir.net (KP Media Group).[6] In 2009, Ivan Valeryevich Montik founded IT company Softswiss.[7] In 2013, Ivan co-founded Unique Exchange, a venture capital project to build a platform for buying and selling real-estate-backed tax debt.[8] In February 2018, Montik founded Bgaming, a Softswiss group brand focused on developing iGaming software.[9]
Public activity
Supporting free and fair elections in Belarus, Montik supported the OSCE mission at the parliamentary elections 2004 and 2008 and presidential elections 2006, providing observers assistance in logistics and translation to OSCE. In 2008, he accompanied the head of OSCE mission Anne-Marie Lizin to the polling stations in Minsk and Zhodino.[10]
In 2009, Montik was among the 48 editors-in-chief and leading European journalists to sign the European Charter on Freedom of the Press. In 2011, Montik was one of the founders of the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF) in Leipzig, Germany.[1]
In association with his business partners, Ivan is donating to Konstantin Khabensky’s Charity fund, which specializes in medical help for children with oncological and other hard brain diseases.[11]
Montik is cooperating with Imena, a non-commercial media-platform for crowdfunding and supporting public organizations in Belarus.[11]
In 2020, he relocated his company's employees from Belarus to Ukraine, and EU countries and started harshly criticizing the Lukashenko authoritarian regime.[12]
According to Malta Today, Montik helped Ukrainian refugees abroad during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.[13]
