Ivan Sergeyevich Yermakov (born April 10, 1986) is a Russian military intelligence officer affiliated with GRU Unit 26165, also known as APT28 or Fancy Bear. He is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for his alleged involvement in multiple cyber operations targeting international institutions and democratic processes.
Alleged Activities
Yermakov has been implicated in several high-profile cyber operations:
- Participation in the 2016 United States presidential election interference, including unauthorized access to servers of the Democratic National Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.[1]
- Involvement in cyber intrusions against international anti-doping agencies such as WADA and USADA during and after the 2016 Summer Olympics.[2]
- Providing remote reconnaissance support for GRU operatives during an attempted cyberattack on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague in 2018.[3]
- Assisting in cyber reconnaissance that preceded the Mariupol theatre airstrike in March 2022, which resulted in civilian casualties.[4]
