Jävert is a noise rock band formed in 2023 in Finland. They primarily do covers, but occasionally have original songs. Their members are Reijo Leinonen, Hannu Terho and Tero Laakkonen.
Musical style
Early Jävert material was self-described as "experimental rock" and "noise rock" by the band, using heavily distorted guitar and a wah pedal to create a unique sound. The wah pedal was eventually dropped, opting for a more traditional style of distortion.
The band dropped the "experimental rock" label as *Bastard* was recorded, calling themselves noise rock and garage punk.
History
Pre-Jävert
Before Jävert was established, talks between Reijo Leinonen and Hannu Terho about forming a noise rock group were in the air. Neither of them had experience in noise rock, as Terho played drums for a crust punk band and Leinonen only learned bass and guitar months prior.
2023-2023: Early days and release of debut album
In late 2023, Jävert, initially named Manslaughter, was started by two friends, Hannu Terho and Reijo Leinonen. As Terho and Leinonen did not own a drum kit or an electric guitar, the pair used a heavily distorted acoustic guitar and pots and pans as a kit for the first and only release of 2023, called *Jävert*. The band was originally supposed to be a one-off, but was eventually expanded upon.
A Fantômas cover was recorded, but never released until 2024, when it was included on a demo album. Both Leinonen and Terho denounce this era of the band, jokingly calling it "fake news" and "not connected to Jävert." Tero Laakkonen, the band's future guitarist, listened to the album alongside Terho and Leinonen, calling it "more noise than rock," whereas the band's current stance is to be "more rock than noise".
2023-2024: Tero joins and changes being made
In December 2023, Tero Laakkonen, a close friend and guitarist, joined the band as Terho found a drum kit. With the new line-up and kit, Jävert recorded an unreleased album named *Bastard*. Remnants of this album have been later released on later releases.
After recording, the band stayed dormant until February 2024, when a demo album was released under Fitö Records, their new label, including old demos and new demos recorded. On the side, a new extended play was being recorded. The extended play was released on the 23rd, being called *Suffering Contest*, as a reference to the No Balls song of the same name. A cover of said song was the first track on the album, being one of two songs to include Reijo playing bass.
Another extended play was released, named *Organ Harvester*. Selected tracks from both *Organ Harvester*, *Bastard* and *Suffering Contest* appeared on the compilation *Comme Ci Comme Ça*.
In March 2024, recording for the next album, now known as *Fucking Disgusting Fish*, occurred, with some demos being re-recorded and some previously unreleased material being put on the album. This album marks the second time Leinonen had played bass on a Jävert record. Jävert had their first live show on 01/03/24, with only one song being recorded, a cover of Urge to Kill by Brainbombs.
