Jürgen Radel (2019)

Jürgen Radel (born 16 December 1975 ) is a German professor of business administration at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW). He teaches in particular in the focus area "Human Resources and Organization".

Biography[edit]

After graduating from the Pius-Gymnasium in Aachen, he studied business education, psychology, and economic and social history at RWTH Aachen University. In addition to his first professional activity at Viega GmbH & Co. KG, Attendorn, he completed his doctorate externally, at the Institute of Technology and Education (ITB), at the University of Bremen, where he graduated "magna cum laude" in 2010 in the subject area of "Change Management".

After completing his doctorate, he joined Leschaco, a logistics service provider in Bremen, as an authorized signatory. In Bremen, he was a member of the Wirtschaftsjunioren Bremen.

In 2014, he received a call to the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Berlin. Since 2023 he is a member of the NTL Institute for Applied Behavioral Science.[1]

Research and teaching[edit]

Jürgen Radel's research focuses on change management and resistance to change that can arise or be amplified due to dynamics in groups.

Through the use of experiential learning, he intends to allow participants in his courses to experience concrete effects, such as those related to resistance to change, in the here and now, rather than discussing them abstractly. For this approach, he was awarded the "Prize for Good Teaching" within the university. In addition to his research in the field of change management, he is co-author,[2] together with Michael Müller-Vorbrüggen, of a book on human resource development.[3]

Together with Roland Schuster, a colleague working at the University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna, he has developed the approach of Experience Centered Teaching/Training Approaches (ECTA), which is about exploring the polarity between classical teaching-learning formats and group-dynamic experience.

One goal of ECTA is to further develop the Harvard Business Cases[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] approach and to jointly develop cases from the current situation in which the learners and teachers (also as learners) find themselves in the here and now. This creates a real-time emotional relationship with the cases developed from and by the group. It is then up to the group to explore these cognitively, making the approach similar to that of a training group (T-group), but without eliciting comparable strong emotional reactions that can arise in training groups. As a result, the approach also finds acceptance in the corporate context, where resistance of managers, for example, is studied.[13]

Depending on the target group, different interventions are used to specifically generate emotions and analyze the actions of a group.[14]

49-point exercise[edit]

One of his better known and published interventions, the "49-point exercise",[15][16] leads students to face a real-life dilemma of whether or not to accept a supposed gift, 49 points in an exam. The intervention is designed to highlight various group dynamic elements.[17] These include, but are not limited to:

  • Peer pressure
  • Individual Values
  • Competing Commitments
  • Bureaucracy and the role of authorities

Research Projects[edit]

In addition to the research projects listed below, Jürgen Radel works on implementation-oriented projects,[18] often embedded in teaching at HTW Berlin. His project focus is currently on socio-technical systems, agile teams, executive coaching and group dynamics.[19][20]
