Hawkins (born June 9, 1959) is an American author of historical fiction, historical nonfiction, historical romance, military fiction, drama, mystery and suspense. She is a three-time winner of the John Esten Cooke Fiction Award. (2013, 2017, 2023) [1] ]2] ]3] She is one of only a few female Civil War authors, and uniquely describes the front lines from a Confederate perspective. Her books have also received the B.R.A.G. Medallion. [4] [5] [6] [7] Biography Julia Dawn Ryan Hawkins was born in Sioux City, Iowa to Darrell Arthur Ryan and Gloria Kay Stofferan. Her parents met each other on a blind date, and were married for over 50 years. Her father was a letter carrier, and her mother was the director of the school of nursing at Mercy Hospital. She has one younger sister. She spent her childhood growing up in Phoenix, Arizona and Sioux City. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from Iowa State University. She married David Hawkins in 1981. They have two sons. She and her husband reside in Redding, California. Career J.D.R. Hawkins is a Wall Street Journal, USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author. She began writing at an early age, starting out with songs and poetry. From there, she expanded into short stories, novellas and children’s picture books. Her first novel was published in 2007.
