J. McLaughlin is an American fashion label based in Brooklyn, New York, United States. It was founded by brothers Jay and Kevin McLaughlin in 1977..[1]

History[edit]

Founding[edit]

While attending NYU’s Business School and working part time at a boutique clothing store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Kevin McLaughlin was also assisting his brother Jay buy and renovate old brownstones in Brooklyn.[2] The two brothers decided to pool their resources and open their own clothing store. [3]

First Stores[edit]

The first storefront the brothers opened was on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Third Avenue.[2] They began operations as Sea Island Clothiers [4], selling traditional classic apparel. In 1979, the stores became known professionally as J. McLaughlin.[3]

The brand’s design style is rooted in the American traditions of work, sport, and play. J. McLaughlin offers accessories and apparel for men and women with an emphasis on craftsmanship and timeless style. Standout colors and a signature portfolio of prints enhance the retailer’s modern relevance. Best selling styles include the Lexi five-pocket jean in solids and prints, the Catalina T-shirt, and the brand’s Arlette turtleneck.

Acquisitions & Business Decisions[edit]

Jay McLaughlin left the business in 2015, while Kevin McLaughlin serves as the brand’s Chief Creative Officer and Co-Founder. McLaughlin currently oversees all product design and creative direction.[5]

In 2015, private equity firm Brentwood Associates acquired J. McLaughlin with the goal of accelerating growth across all channels [6]. Brentwood’s experience with direct to consumer and retail channels are what made the partnership an attractive opportunity for J. McLaughlin [6].

Management[edit]

Mary Ellen Coyne was named CEO in 2016 with a focus on strategy and operations including merchandising, product development, marketing, brand development, retail and ecommerce growth[5] [7]. In 2017, Coyne brought in Glynis Karp to serve as chief merchandising officer.[8]

Retail stores[edit]

In 1999, the first J. McLaughlin store outside of New York opened in Naples, Florida.[9] Currently, there are more than 150 stores in 23 states.[10][11] Each shop is designed differently to reflect the store’s region and the architecture of the town. J. McLaughlin’s flagship store is its Madison Avenue location, found between 92nd and 93rd Street.[12]

To show support for various community causes, J. McLaughlin holds in-store events at its retail locations supporting local philanthropic causes.[13]

Partnerships[edit]

Everglades[edit]

In 2018, J. McLaughlin partnered with the Everglades Foundation to create a limited edition cashmere collection [14]. The Florida-based nonprofit is committed to restoring and protecting Florida’s everglades. Since the retailer has over 20 locations in Florida, the brand considers Florida to be its second home. The cashmere collection was featured in J. McLaughlin’s Winter Resort Catalog, in select J. McLaughlin Florida stores, and online at www.jmclaughlin.com. The collection featured cashmere sweaters for women and girls with a sea-life graphic. Twenty percent of the proceeds benefited the foundation. In 2019, J. McLaughlin and the Everglades Foundation announced their second partnership, with a series of in-store events to support the cause [15].

Boys & Girls Club[edit]

Boys & Girls Clubs of Union County partnered with J. McLaughlin to host a trunk show where 15% of sales benefitted Boys & Girls clubs[16].

Save the Children[edit]

In April 2018, J. McLaughlin partnered with Save the Children by holding a charity shopping event at its 72nd Street and Lexington Avenue location. Fifteen percent of the night’s proceeds were donated to the charity[17].

Memorial Sloan Kettering[edit]

The Society Boutique transformed into a J. McLaughlin store for four days in 2014, with 30% of all sales going to the Society of Memorial Sloan Kettering [18][19]

Miscellaneous[edit]

Kevin McLaughlin and his wife, Barbara McLaughlin, share an Upper East Side townhouse known for its unique decor. The yellow front door and vertical mail slot make it a popular Instagram location. The interior of the couple’s home has been profiled on design sites and publications such as Frederic Magazine, for its whimsical mix of color and print[20]
