JJD
John J. Dilustro is an American educator, biologist, and academic administrator. He currently serves as the Provost of Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where he is also a professor of biology.
Early life and education
Dilustro earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by a Master of Science and Ph.D. in ecological sciences from Old Dominion University. He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, affiliated with the University of Georgia.
Academic career
Dilustro joined the faculty of Chowan University, where he has taught a variety of undergraduate courses, including environmental science, principles of ecology, plant diversity, senior seminar, and general biology. His teaching emphasizes hands-on learning and ecological fieldwork.
In January 2025, he was appointed as the university’s provost, having previously served as associate provost. As chief academic officer, he oversees academic programs, curriculum development, faculty affairs, and accreditation, serving as the university's liaison to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). He was also selected for the Senior Leadership Academy, a national higher education leadership program co-sponsored by the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute.
Research
Dilustro's research focuses on plant and ecosystem ecology, including studies on root biomass response to elevated atmospheric CO₂, vegetation recovery after environmental disturbances, and land-use impacts on forest ecosystems. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and is indexed on Google Scholar.
Community involvement
He has contributed to campus and local sustainability efforts, including leading the creation of a community garden at Chowan University. He is a member of the ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital Directors Council.
Honors
In 2009, Dilustro was selected as the Alpha Chi Teacher of the Year and in 2018, Dilustro was named Chowan University’s Employee of the Year for the 2017–2018 academic year.
