JSS Medical Research offers services in the clinical development program, including Phase I-III clinical trials ranging from small to large complex multinational projects and in the late and post-approval phase, encompassing Phase IV studies, post-marketing observational studies, post-approval clinical epidemiological studies, chart reviews, registry studies, database analyses, epidemiological surveys and health economics and outcomes research studies among other services.[5]

Early History (1985-2006)[edit]

JSS Medical Research was founded in 1985 by Dr. John S. Sampalis, a McGill University graduate and professor.[6] The company originated as a university-based consultancy group providing services, frequently in the form of statistical analysis and medical writing, to pharmaceutical companies. In 1997, services were expanded to include clinical operations and information technology solutions. In 2005, an internal quality assurance department was added which implemented a Quality Assurance Program under the direction of compliance specialists from SNC Lavalin. Since then, the QA Program has been managed internally. The following year, study monitoring and training were added to its services, marking it as a full service CRO.[7]

Recent History (2007-present)[edit]

In 2012, services expanded to include a health economics and outcomes research department, to provide reimbursement strategy services and leverage health economics expertise to build key elements of reimbursement submissions.[8] In 2013, JSS Medical Research initiated the first of several acquisitions by acquiring Latam Clinical Trials, a CRO company based in Bogota, Colombia with expertise in the Latin America area.[9] The subsequent year, the company strengthened its position in Canada by merging with Integrated Research Inc., another CRO based in Montreal and became the largest Canadian-owned CRO.[10] In 2015, JSS Medical Research acquired Max Neeman International, in India, expanding its footprint into the Asia/Pacific region.[11] The following year, JSS Medical Research acquired Bonne Santé, a CRO in Poland, furthering its expansion into Europe.[12]

Scientific Contribution[edit]

JSS Medical Research has over 30 years of experience in clinical research with clinical operations handling high volumes of recruitment with over 400,000 patients processed at more than 8,000 sites in the last five years.[13] The scientific affairs department is composed of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, physicians, medical scientists, pharmacovigilance experts and medical writers.[14] Senior managers are members of faculty at internationally recognized universities including McGill University, University of Montreal, University of Laval and University of Antioquia.[15] Bridging industry and academia is one of the differentiators of JSS Medical Research. This is exemplified by the number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, over 160, and presentations at scientific conferences produced by JSS Medical Research’s team.[16][17]

CEO and founder, Dr. John S. Sampalis received the Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 - Quebec Health Sciences Award for his success with JSS Medical Research.[18] The annual Entrepreneur of the Year Award celebrates entrepreneurial contribution and spirit and is the most prestigious business award for entrepreneurs across Canada.[19]
