The Laurel Independent
The Laurel Independent is a nonprofit community newspaper serving Laurel and surrounding communities in Prince George's County, Maryland. Published by Streetcar Suburbs Publishing Inc., the newspaper provides local reporting on government, education, business, public safety and community affairs. Its monthly print edition reaches approximately 30,000 homes and businesses throughout Laurel, West Laurel and South Laurel, with additional digital coverage extending into neighboring communities in Howard and Anne Arundel counties.
The newspaper is part of Streetcar Suburbs Publishing's network of nonprofit community publications, which also includes Hyattsville Life & Times and College Park Here & Now. Together, the organization's newspapers reach approximately 50,000 households across central Prince George's County.
History
The Laurel Independent traces its origins to 2021, when then-Laurel Mayor Craig A. Moe convened a task force of former local journalists, civic leaders and community members to explore creating a new community newspaper following years of declining local news coverage in Laurel. Published by Streetcar Suburbs Publishing, the newspaper released its first edition in July 2022.[1]
The publication launched under a municipal publishing agreement with the City of Laurel. Under the agreement, the city purchases a four-page municipal information section in each monthly edition and supports printing and distribution to every residential and business address within the city, while the newspaper maintains independent editorial control over its news coverage.
Since its launch, The Laurel Independent has expanded editorial coverage beyond the City of Laurel to include West Laurel, South Laurel, North Laurel and Maryland City. Grant funding later enabled the expansion of print distribution into West Laurel and South Laurel.
Legacy
The Laurel Independent was established during a period of significant decline in local journalism throughout Prince George's County.
Its creation followed the closure or reduction of several community newspapers serving Laurel, including The Gazette, whose Prince George's County editions ceased publication in 2013, and The Laurel Leader, the city's longest-serving newspaper, which suspended publication in 2022. The newspaper was created to restore regular local reporting on municipal government, education, public safety and community affairs.
Coverage
The Laurel Independent covers communities throughout the greater Laurel region, including:
- Laurel
- West Laurel
- South Laurel
- Beltsville
- Calverton
- North Laurel (Howard County)
- Maryland City (Anne Arundel County)
Coverage includes:
- Municipal government
- County government
- Elections
- Public safety
- Education
- Business and economic development
- Housing and land use
- Transportation
- Community organizations
- Arts and culture
- High school and community sports
The publication also produces explanatory reporting designed to help residents better understand public policy, local government and civic issues.
Distribution
The Laurel Independent is published monthly in print and continuously online.
Its print edition reaches approximately 30,000 homes and businesses throughout Laurel, West Laurel and South Laurel.
Although the newspaper's editorial coverage extends into North Laurel and Maryland City, those communities are primarily served through the newspaper's digital platforms.
Funding
The Laurel Independent operates under a diversified nonprofit funding model supported through municipal partnerships, grants, traditional print advertising and community fundraising.
The newspaper launched under a $60,000 annual publishing agreement with the City of Laurel to publish a monthly municipal information section and distribute the newspaper to every home and business within the city.
Beginning with the Fiscal Year 2026 budget process in 2025, the agreement became the subject of recurring public debate after Mayor Keith R. Sydnor proposed reducing city funding for the publication. During the following year's budget process, the mayor proposed an additional reduction.[2]
During both budget cycles, residents, nonprofit leaders and community organizations organized campaigns supporting continued municipal investment in the newspaper. The Laurel City Council voted to restore funding above the mayor's proposed levels during both budget deliberations, citing the publication's role in providing local news, civic information and community engagement.[3]
Journalism
The Laurel Independent reports on local government, education, elections, public safety, business, housing, transportation and community affairs throughout the Laurel region.
Its reporting includes breaking news, enterprise stories, explanatory journalism, election guides, investigative reporting and feature stories focused on issues affecting residents in Prince George's, Howard and Anne Arundel counties.
Reception and impact
Since its founding, The Laurel Independent has become one of the primary sources of local news serving the Laurel area following the decline of legacy community newspapers.
In addition to daily reporting, the publication has produced election guides, municipal budget coverage, investigative reporting and explanatory journalism intended to increase civic participation and public understanding of local government.
Public campaigns supporting the newspaper during the 2025 and 2026 city budget processes highlighted its role in Laurel's civic life and generated community discussion about sustainable funding models for nonprofit local journalism.
