Jacek Jassem (born 21 October 1951 in Kraków[1])) – a Polish oncologist, a professor of medicine at the Medical University of Gdańsk.
Education and employment
Jacek Jassem completed his medical studies at the Medical Academy of Gdańsk (now known as the Medical University of Gdańsk) in 1975.[2] That same year he began work at the Department of Oncology and Radiotherapy there, and in 1990 he was appointed head of this unit.[2] He received his doctorate (PhD) in medicine in 1980, his higher doctorate (DSc) in 1987, and the academic title of full professor in 1996.[1][2] He has held training fellowships at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam.[3] He is a specialist in medical oncology and oncological radiotherapy.[2]
Research
Jassem is the author of over 700 peer-reviewed articles, books and book chapters[2][4], and ten patents / patent applications[5]. His publications have gathered over 19,000 citations (excluding self-citations).[6] He has an h-index of 55, and a cumulative Impact Factor of 1960.[6]
Research community involvement
Jassem is a member of Academia Europaea,[7][8] a fellow of the European Academy of Cancer Sciences,[9] and a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU).[10][2] [11] President of the Polish Oncological Society (2010-2014)[12]; an honorary member of the Polish Oncological Society[13] and the Polish Society of Surgical Oncology.[14] Coordinator of the development and implementation of Poland's Cancer Control Strategy 2015–2024.[15] Founder and president (since 2004) of the Gdańsk Oncological Association.[16] Founder (2014) and president (since 2018) of the Polish Cancer League.[17]
Awards and distinctions
Jassem has received national and international distinctions, including the Polish Prime Minister's Award[18] for outstanding research achievements, the Mayor of Vienna's Award[1] for innovations in oncology, the Joseph W. Cullen Prevention/Early Detection Award of the IASLC,[19] and the Hevelius Research Award of the City of Gdańsk.[1]. He has been involved in various civil initiatives regarding public health, such as the development of Poland's tobacco smoking ban legislation in 2006 (enacted in 2010), which earned him recognition as “Leader of the Year in Health Protection”.[1]
In Poland, Jassem has been decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland[20], a Silver and Gold Cross of Merit, and a Medal of the National Education Commission[21]
