Jack 'Russia' Roberts

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jack 'Russia' Roberts (1 May 1899-30 January 1979) was a Welsh miner and Communist politician.

Roberts was born in Penrhyndeudraeth, the son of a miner and received a basic education before beginning work in the Windsor Colliery at the age of 14. His support for the Communist Party began during the 1921 miners' lock out. In 1933 he was sacked from his job for stealing coal and from then on he was in constant trouble with the police. After escaping jail in London three times he returned to South Wales to folk hero status. In 1935 he was elected to the District Council in Abertridwr and was a prominent figure in the 1936 Hunger March to London. In 1937 he joined the British Batallion of the International Brigades to fight for the Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. He returned to Abertridwr in 1938 to seek re-election and remained a councillor until 1953 after which he continued to champion the Communist cause.[1]
