Jack A Gilbert

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jack A Gilbert (born 1977 in St Leonards on Sea, United Kingdom) is a Professor of Surgery at University of Chicago, and Director of the Microbiome Center[1]. He cofounded both the American Gut Project[2], and the Earth Microbiome Project[3], and is a pioneer in the field of Microbiology the Built Environment. His lab focuses on the application of ecological theory to microbial ecosystems in myriad environments including human health, environmental systems, and biotechnology.

Gilbert earned his B.Sc. from the King's College London in 1998, and his Ph.D. in microbial antifreeze proteins from Unilever and Nottingham University, UK in 2002. He subsequently performed his postdoctoral studies in antifreeze protein biochemistry[4] at Queen's University, Canada. He subsequently returned to the UK in 2005 to Plymouth Marine Laboratory as a senior scientist where he worked on marine microbial ecology, publishing some of the seminal works in metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and longitudinal investigations of the marine environments[5][6][7][8][9]

in 2010 he moved to Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Chicago. Currently, Gilbert is also Group Leader for Microbial Ecology at Argonne National Laboratory, Research Associate at the Field Museum of Natural History, Scientific Fellow at the Marine Biological Laboratory, and the Yeoh Ghim Seng Visiting Professorship in Surgery at the National University of Singapore.

Gilbert has authored more than 250 peer reviewed publications and book chapters on metagenomics and approaches to ecosystem ecology. Gilbert is considered a pioneer of the field of Microbiology of the Built Environment, publishing many of the key research papers in this area[10] [11]. He is also leading the development of translational approaches for precision medicine with a specific focus on the microbiome, and is leading the development of the new Duchossois Institute for Family Health and Wellness at the University of Chicago.

He has been committed to peer reviewed scientific publishing, being a senior editor for The International Society for Microbial Ecology Journal (The ISME Journal), and the Environmental Microbiology Journal[12]. He is currently the founding Editor in Chief of mSystems journal[13]. In 2014 he was recognized on Crain’s Business Chicago’s 40 Under 40[14] List, and in 2015 he was listed as one of the 50 most influential scientists by Business Insider, and in the Brilliant Ten by Popular Scientist. In 2016 he won the Altemeier Prize from the Surgical Infection Society[15], and the WH Pierce Prize from the Society for Applied Microbiology for research excellence.

In 2017, Gilbert co-authored Dirt is Good published by St Martin's Press with Sandra Blakeslee and (Rob Knight). The book is a popular science guide to the microbiome and the health of pregnant women and children.[16]
