Jack M. Senff (Born December 31, 1990) is an American musician and songwriter who is best known for his role as a vocalist in the screamo bands Merchant Ships, Midwest Pen Pals and William Bonney.

Musical career

Early projects

In 2007, Senff formed his first band called We Are The Colossus after seeing a local band in South Bend, Indiana perform live. The band made only one demo containing 2 songs before breaking up. He then began running a music venue from his church basement where local bands would come to perform. Future La Dispute member Adam Vass performed at the venue with his old band Lion of The North. Senff describes the experience of seeing bands live as "life-changing".[1]

Merchant Ships and Midwest Pen Pals

After being inspired by vocalist Doyle Martin's style of performing, Senff and his close friend Dwayne Robinson decided to form Merchant Ships with Senff on vocals and Robinson on drums. They recruited Nick Stutsman and Michael Gerstein as their guitarist and bassist, respectively. Their first demo was released in 2008.[2]

Merchant Ships then self-released their first official EP in 2009.[3] Senff and Stutsman would then form Midwest Pen Pals in the summer of 2009 with Garrett Cabello on drums. The position for bassist never had a permanent member and was filled by Taylor Urban, Mike Mellen, Zach Quella, and Kyle Luck.[4] Senff self-released their sole EP Inside Jokes on July 3, 2009 before breaking up in September of the same year.[5]

Senff would reunite with Merchant Ships in 2010 and signed to Count Your Lucky Stars and released one EP "For Cameron" before breaking up once again. The band would end up releasing their full discography for free via their Myspace which included a compilation entitled Shipsography.[6]

William Bonney and Sailor Heart

After the breakup of Merchant Ships, Senff reunited with Gerstein and formed William Bonney. They released their first demo on September 22, 2010 [7] William Bonney then signed to Sometimes I Get Drunk Records (later renamed to Major Bear Records) where they released their first EP Good Vibes on May 1, 2011.[8][9]

Sometime after the release of William Bonney's first EP, Senff moved to Seattle and started his first solo project as Sailor Heart. Although he was still a member of William Bonney, they remained inactive and did not make any new material. Sailor Heart was a major change in sound and style for Senff. For the first time in his career, he shied away from screaming vocals and instead opted for a softer, acoustic sound. Senff released his first album as Sailor Heart on October 10, 2011.[10]

Senff then reunited with William Bonney and released a split with Droughts on February 7, 2012.[11] William Bonney officially parted ways after this release. Two compilations have been released since.[12][13]

Senff released his final album as Sailor Heart titled The Distance of Boat Rides on April 30, 2012.[14]

Later projects

After the breakup of William Bonney, Senff started North Folk and made one demo in 2013. [15]

Senff reunited with Garrett Cabello once more to form Knola alongside drummer Joseph Goode. Cabello took the role of bassist and Senff played guitar while also providing vocals. Collectively, they would make 1 EP and 1 studio album before breaking up in late 2016.[16]

Senff would then start another solo project under the name Boy Rex. Senff released a demo, 2 albums and a live album[17] before shedding the Boy Rex title in favor of performing under his own name. So far, Senff has made 2 albums and a compilation under his own name[18]

Personal life

Senff is straight-edge; he says the reason for doing so is to spite his parents, who both suffered from alcoholism. His issues with his parents were a major source of inspiration in his earlier work.[19][20][21]

He cites Daïtro, American Football and Mike Kinsella as major influences.

In a podcast interview, Senff said that he would not reunite with Merchant Ships if given the opportunity.[22]
