From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Intro[edit]

Jackie Fielder (born October 4, 1994 in Long Beach, CA) is an American educator, organizer, and activist in San Francisco, CA. She is currently running for California’s 11th Senate District, which encompasses San Francisco and parts of San Mateo County.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Fielder was born in Long Beach, CA on October 4, 1994 to her mother Teresa, of Mexican descent, and father Clinton, of Two Kettle Lakota and Hidatsa descent.[1] She is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota. Her parents divorced during her childhood. Fielder spent most of her upbringing living with her single mother in Lakewood, CA.

Fielder attended Stanford University and graduated in 2016, where she earned a Bachelors of Arts in Public Policy and a Masters of Arts in Sociology. While there, she organized and worked on several projects, including teaching a legal program in a youth detention center, organizing book drives for the Prisoners Literature Project, leading tours and panels for first generation and low income (FLI) students of color with Project Motivation, and mentoring FLI Stanford students.

Career[edit]

Following graduation from Stanford, Fielder traveled to the Standing Rock Reservation to support the Indigenous-led resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline and subsequently worked as campaign coordinator for Lakota People’s Law Project while launching the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition to advocate for the divestment of public revenue from Wall Street banks involved in the financing of pipelines, private prisons, and weapon manufacturing.[2][3]

In 2018, the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition and partners formed the California Public Banking Alliance to organize a campaign in support of AB 857, ultimately succeeding in October 2019.[4] Fielder also ran the successful opposition to the local ballot measure Proposition H, which sought to expand police officers’ use of force abilities in San Francisco.[5]

In 2018, Fielder began teaching “Race, Women, and Class” at San Francisco State University, a course formerly taught by civil rights icon Angela Davis and Black Lives Matter co- founder Alicia Garza.[6] She has also worked with Mijente, focusing on immigrant rights and the ties between Silicon Valley and ICE and CBP.[7]

Fielder appears in Maroon 5’s music video for “Girls Like You” wearing a “DIVEST: Water is Life” shirt.[8]

2020 California State Senate Campaign[edit]

In November 2019, Fielder announced her candidacy for California’s 11th Senate District, currently represented by incumbent Scott Wiener. Being born and raised in California, Fielder has experienced and witnessed the vast economic inequalities that hinder the working class, citing this as one of the main reasons behind running for State Senate.[9] She believes that “we have the courage to take on the crises facing our city, our country, and our planet.”[10]

In the March 2020 California Primary, Fielder secured 33.2% of the vote in a three-way race.[11]

Political Positions[edit]

Fielder is a self-described democratic socialist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

She supports universal rent control in California, Medicare for All (single payer), the Green New Deal, housing as a human right, free public transportation, taxing billionaires and millionaires, defunding the police, the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and access to abortion services.

Fielder characterizes democratic socialism as “a society in which housing, health care, and education are regarded as human rights, and people have the ability to actualize their own lives.”[12]

Personal Life[edit]

Fielder identifies as queer and has also experienced housing insecurity--sleeping on friend’s couches and in her car--as a result of the Bay Area’s affordable housing crisis.[13]
