Jacob Aizikowitz (born April 12, 1951) is an Israeli entrepreneur, a business executive and the founding father of integrated print and digital-media personalization. He recently retired from Xerox, where he was the President of XMPie, A Xerox company, which is a company he founded in 2000. XMPie was acquired by [1] Xerox NYSE: XRX in 2006. He holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Technion in Israel, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in the USA.
Early life and education
Aizikowitz was born and raised in Hadera, Israel. His parents were Holocaust survivors from Lithuania who immigrated to Israel after World War II. He began his three-year mandatory military service in 1969, and served again in 1973, during the Yom Kippur War; he retired with a rank of Lieutenant colonel. In 1977 Aizikowitz earned a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology; years later, in 1990, he earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University, with a focus on Distributed Systems[2].
Business career
Post graduating from the Technion, Aizikowitz joined Mini Systems, which was the Software house developing all Software for Scitex Corporation. At Mini, Aizikowitz worked under the guidance of the late Prof. Amir Pnueli, and this is where he came to know Efi Arazi, the legendary founder and leader of Scitex.
In 1983, Aizikowitz left Scitex, going to Cornell University to obtain a Ph.D. in Computer Science. This move back to academic studies was partially triggered by a visit, while at Scitex, with Arazi and other senior leaders at Xerox PARC (and other Silicon Valley companies), where the future of personal computing and local area networking was being developed in the labs.
In 1989, as Aizikowitz was finishing his Thesis at Cornell, and getting ready to join the academic / research world, Arazi reached out. He offered Aizikowitz to join the founding team of Electronics for Imaging [3] NASDAQ: EFII (EFI), the company Arazi was founding in the Silicon Valley. Aizikowitz accepted and joined EFI as its R&D Director, and he was later promoted to EFI VP Engineering.
At EFI Aizikowitz guided the early stages of developing the Fiery™, which later became the flagship product of EFI; he also led the development of EfiColor™ and Cachet™, two Software products that were groundbreaking in bringing color to desktop publishing.
These technologies, together with work by Adobe and Apple, brought quality color to desktop publishing, which was at the heart of the Arazi vision behind EFI.
In 1992 / 1993 the Aizikowitz family returned to Israel, and as part of this move, Aizikowitz joined IBM Research in Haifa, leading its Applications, Solutions, and Services initiative. Few years later, in 1996, Aizikowitz joined Scitex, for a second term. At Scitex, with his team, he led the early stages of the R&D of the Creo Controller. In parallel, they developed Scitex VPS™ which became a leading, object-based, page description language for variable data printing. The success of VPS inspired the founding of XMPie.
XMPie:
In late 1999 Aizikowitz founded XMPie Inc., together with Israel Roth and Reuven Sherwin, as a spin-off from Scitex, who provided the seed round. They later raised their first round, and several subsequent rounds, from Jerusalem Venture Partners ("JVP"). Aizikowitz served as XMPie President, CEO, and CTO, at various times. With the team and the support of the investors, and by leveraging the various business connections from the Scitex and EFI days, Aizikowitz led the firm to become an innovative leader in personalization and cross media, bridging the gap that separated Print Personalization and Digital Media Personalization.
In the end of 2006 XMPie was acquired by Xerox [4] yet remained as an independent entity, continuing to serve the whole market. In 2017 XMPie was named a leader in CCM by Gartner [5].
Patents:
Jacob has been granted multiple patents[6], many of which relate to efficient ways of creating multiple pages[7][8][9], all personalized, without sacrificing the creativity of the design, and boosting performances of composition engines in highly repeatable documents.
Personal life
Aizikowitz is married to Nava Aizikowitz, and they reside in Haifa, Israel.
