Jacob Ind
Jacob Ind is a Colorado native who was convicted of murdering his mother and stepfather in 1992. He is currently serving a life sentence without parole in Teller County jail, despite committing his crimes as a minor.
Murder
Ind paid a fellow high school student named Gabriel Adams $2,000 to kill his mother Pamela and his stepfather Kermode on the early morning of December 17, 1992. Ind was fifteen years old at the time. When Adams' efforts were unsuccessful, Ind woke up and used his stepfather's gun to finish the job himself.[1] The struggle was a brutal one; both Jacob and his accomplice stabbed, shot, and sprayed bear mace on their victims.[2] Ind planned to go to school the next day to tell a friend about the crime and then commit suicide, but his friend alerted the authorities.
Trial
Ind's trial began on May 12, 1994.[1] The defense argued that Ind's crime was motivated by years of sexual abuse from his stepfather, as well as emotional and physical abuse from both parents. Defense attorney Shaun Kaufman did not allow Ind to come to the stand, claiming that "he wouldn't have been a fabulous advocate" due to his history of abuse. Mary Ellen Johnson, a writer assigned to the case, asserted that the defense team was negligent in its duties, as they did not hire experts to investigate the full extent of Ind's abuse.[3] On June 17 of the same year, Ind was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, which came with a mandatory minimum of life in prison. Because Ind was a minor, he was not eligible for the death penalty. Ind's accomplice Adams was also sentenced to life in prison in a separate trial.[1]
Life in Prison and Retrial
Ind spent a year in prison before being sent to the Colorado State Penitentiary for carrying contraband in his cell. Ind spent eight years there and earned a bachelor's degree in biblical studies.[1] He was later sent back to Teller County Jail, where he is currently still serving time.[4] In October 2017, District Judge Jane Tidball set aside Ind's charges and granted him a retrial. Instead of bringing his self-defense argument back to court, Ind pleaded guilty to his crimes to get a reduced sentence. His exact sentence, which will be between 32 and 72 years, has not been determined as of December 2018. [4][5]
