Jacqueline Manuel
Jacqueline "Jackie" Vicki Manuel (1962/1963 (age 62–63) – September 13, 2025)[1] was an Australian academic and professor of secondary English education within the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.[2][3][4][unreliable source?] Her research interests and publications span areas such as English education, teacher motivation, the history and development of secondary English curriculum, and the professional experiences of early career teachers.[2][3]
She is known for her research and expertise in English education as well as her opinions on educational reforms, including criticizing changes that she felt watered down the HSC English syllabus, as well as commenting on the debate to shift from examinations to teacher assessments during the Covid-19 Pandemic.[5][6]
Education and career
Manuel held a Bachelor of Arts, a Diploma of Education and a PhD in English Literature from the University of New England. She earned her PhD in 1991.[2][4][unreliable source?]
Manuel was a member of the NSW Higher School Certificate English Examination Committee (Standard and Advanced) from 2004 to 2006 and a Chief Examiner of Year 12 HSC English in NSW from 2007 to 2011.[2][6] She served in other key curriculum leadership roles, including as chair of committees for the NSW Board of Studies and as a member of panels for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL).[4][unreliable source?]
