Jacques Robert (born 1949) is an academic French cancer researcher. As a specialist in anticancer pharmacology, he headed the biochemistry laboratory of the Institut Bergonié in Bordeaux for nearly forty years and has been professor emeritus at the University of Bordeaux since 2018.

His research focuses on predicting anticancer drug activity, tumour drug resistance, pharmacogenetics and cancer genomics. His h-index is 62.[1]

Biography

Education

Jacques Robert received an M.D. from the University of Bordeaux in 1974, followed by a Ph.D. in science from the University of Strasbourg in 1978. He subsequently served as faculty assistant (1974), research associate (1978), assistant professor (1987) and was appointed full professor and hospital practitioner in 1994.

Academic and hospital career

He spent most of his career at the University of Bordeaux and at the Institut Bergonié, where he ran the biochemistry laboratory. He became professor emeritus in 2018.

He is a member of INSERM Unit 1312 and currently works on cancer genomics using public databases of human cancer cell lines and human tumours, including:

In 2014, he spent a sabbatical semester at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda in the team of Yves Pommier.

Research

Robert’s research covers the identification of tools for predicting anticancer drug activity, including:

  • pharmacokinetics
  • metabolism of anticancer agents
  • tumour resistance to treatment
  • cellular and molecular pharmacology
  • pharmacogenetics
  • cancer genomics

He has contributed to studies of:

  • anthracyclines
  • camptothecin derivatives
  • modulators of multidrug resistance
  • tyrosine kinase receptor inhibitors

He is the author or co-author of more than 250 original articles and around 100 review papers. He is part of the INSERM Unit 1312 team “Reprogramming Tumour Activity and its Associated Microenvironment” at BRIC Bordeaux.[2]

Institutional service

Robert served as president of the French Cancer Society in 2004–2005, where he initiated several training programmes for oncology residents.

He has held positions on numerous committees, including:

  • Ligue contre le cancer National League against Cancer
  • INSERM
  • ARC Foundation
  • INCa
  • French National Council of Universities

He is the editor of the book series L’innovation thérapeutique en cancérologie[3] and deputy editor of the series Thérapies ciblées du cancer.[4]

He has also served on the editorial boards of:

  • Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology
  • European Journal of Cancer
  • Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology
  • Fundamental and Clinical Pharmacology
  • Journal of Chemotherapy
  • Bulletin du Cancer[5]
  • Innovation et thérapeutique en oncologie[6]
