Jacques Roston
Jacques Roston (* 1874 in Koło in Poland; † 1947 in London) was a language teacher and translator and the inventor of the Linguaphone method.
Biography
Jacques Roston (Jakub Rosenblum) was born in 1874 in Poland, which was then under Russian administration.
In 1901, he founded the Linguaphone Group,[1] in High Holborn, London, a company that developed and distributed self-study language learning programs, and which continues to operate internationally today.
He recognized very early the potential of the gramophone in language learning. By 1921, Linguaphone courses were available for learning English in German, Italian, French, Spanish, Afrikaans, and Esperanto. In the 1920s, Roston consolidated his translation agency, which became the largest in Britain, and improved the technology of the gramophone. He developed the Linguaphone Repeater, which automatically placed the tone arm over the groove without having to lift it manually, and the Linguaphone Solophone, which allowed isolated listening through headphones. By the late 1920s, Linguaphone courses had been conducted in 92 countries.
