Jade Road

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jade bi from the Liangzhu culture

The Jade Road refers to a system of trade routes in Ancient China primarily used for the transportation and trade of jade. It is considered to be the ancestor of the more well-known Silk Road.[1] The history of the Jade Road remains poorly recorded and the details of its position, timeline, and network are disputed academically.

The Jade Road is named after the mineral. Not only was jade used for decorative purposes, but also for supernatural and religious aspects within the Liangzhouou culture, also known as jade culture, of 3300–2300 BC. The pass through which the oldest branch of the Central Asian side of the Road was accessed is called the Jade Gate (Yumanan Pass). The Jade Gate is on the edge of the easternmost part of what was called the "Western region" of the contemporary Gansu province and is east of modern Xinjiang. It was a territory of different eastern Iranian tribes and ethnicities (Sakā/Yuezhi/Wusun) before Xiongnu (Xionittes)[2] took control of the region.

The Jade Road is mentioned by historians of the Zhou dynasty who told the story of a man named Moo-Wan who set out on a two-year journey in search of jade for its mystical powers. Jade is said to have first been mined in the territory of Lake Baikal around 5000 BC.[3]
