Prof. Dato' Dr. Jafri Malin bin Abdullah is a Malaysian academic and neurosurgeon. He is the Chairman and the founder of Brain and Behavior Cluster (BBC), School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).[1] The BBC, formerly known as the Neuroscience Services and Research Center, Universiti Sains Malaysia (P3Neuro) is the first in Southeast Asia. He is also the 'Founding Head' and former Head of Neuroscience Department, Health Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian, Kota Bharu Kelantan.[2] He was one of the pioneers who introduced and enhanced the field of clinical and experimental neurosciences in Malaysia and expanded it through the Malaysian Academy of Sciences.

Early life and education

Prof. Dr. Jafri Malin is the eldest son of Lieutenant General Datuk Abdullah Samsudin and Datin Norleni Mohd Salleh. He attended Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin Science High School or better known at that time as Penang Science High School. Later, he moved to Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra Science High School, Kelantan. After that he was sent by the Malaysian Public Service Department to continue his studies at Leederville Technical College, Perth in Western Australia and then enrolled for a while as a Bachelor of BSc (Microbiology) at the University of Western Australia, Perth.

Among the degrees that Professor Jafri obtained was a Doctor of Medicine from School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia. Eight years after that he obtained a Neurosurgery Specialist Diploma from Ghent University, Belgium. Next, he obtained a Ph.D (Magna Cum Laude) from the same university under the supervision of Prof. Luc Calliauw and Prof. Jacques Caemaert.

Research and career

Prof. Dr. Jafri Malin was trained as a fellow in the specialization of Stereotactic Functional and Pain Neurosurgery at Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm, Sweden (under the supervision of Prof. Bjorn Meyerson) from December 1994 to May 1995 and did a short attachment in Skull Base Surgery under the late Professor Rhoton of University of Florida, Gainesville, USA.[3] He was also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the European Stroke Society.

Since being a fellow at the Academy of Science Malaysia, he established the facilities of the neurosciences department in 2001, the first and only establishment in South East Asia that covers the teaching, learning, research and community aspects of undergraduate medical sciences as well as postgraduate neurosciences, including basic, fundamental, applied and clinical neurosciences and became the first Head of Neuroscience Department, Health Campus, USM.[4] He is currently a Professor of Neurosciences and the Chairman of Brain and Behaviour Cluster, School of Medical Sciences, USM.

His main research areas are in the field of neuro-oncology examining genetics and brain tumours, the use of the oncolytic virus to treat brain tumours at the fundamental and applied levels (up to non-human rodent model), neuro-electrophysiology using oocyte voltage clamp and patch clamp, rodent behaviour modelling at medical chemistry relevant to neurosurgical sciences (up to non-human rodent models), infusion via CSF pathway to bypass the blood brain barrier (BBB) of new compounds, thus researching BBB modelling for compounds via ethnopharmacology. He has worked in the field of neuroimaging (fMRI, white matter tractography, EEG and MEG connectivity sciences) in relation to cognitive neurosciences and clinical neuropsychology. He has also conducted research on STEM cell neurosciences at the clinical research level.[3] On December 2022, he officially established a human STEM cell group for treating neurological diseases.

As of 2023, he has an h-index of 41 and 14607 citations.[5]

Awards and honours

He was awarded the prestigious Young National Malaysian Scientist Award in 2000 and the 2013 Top Research Scientists Award.[3] In 2001 and 2003 he was awarded Sanggar Sanjung for his scientific research.[6] He also received Darjah Seri Paduka Setia Mahkota Kelantan Yang Amat Terbilang (P.S.K) in 2009. He was selected to receive the 'Taraf Penyelidikan Terkini' in Malaysia (CREAM) by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) for the Potential Journal category.[7]
