Jagi Mangat Panda (Born – November 6, 1967) is a Media/Broadcast Entrepreneur who is considered the poster child [1] of women entrepreneurship in Odisha. She is the Founder & Managing Director of Odisha’s largest television network Odisha Television Ltd. Jagi holds the distinction of successfully launching Odisha’s first satellite news channel OTV and is credited with making Odisha Television Limited a market leader with popular and household channels like OTV, Tarang, Tarang Music, Prarthana & Alankar.
Early Life
Jagi completed her Bachelor’s in Biology and Chemistry from Osmania University (Hyderabad) in 1987–88. Though her parents, Ranadhir Singh & Uma Devi, wanted her to be a doctor, she moved to Mumbai to pursue her career in professional modelling. During her days at Stanley Junior College, she won the Miss Stanley Contest and subsequently went on to become Miss Andhra Pradesh, which laid the foundation stone of her modelling career. During this phase of her career as a full-time model, she also had a short stint with Air India as an air hostess.
Personal Life
Jagi Panda’s career path changed after she met her husband Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda in 1992 [2]. Following her marriage with Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda, who is a four-time MP & current National Vice President of BJP, Jagi moved to Odisha and her long and successful journey in entrepreneurship began. In 1996, she completed her Management Development Programme [3] at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-Ahmedabad).
Career
In 1996, she became the Founder and Managing Director of Ortel Communications Ltd., a last-mile cable and broadband company with a market-leading position in Odisha and footprints in Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh & Kolkata. In 1998, she founded Odisha Television Ltd (OTV), the first private sector Odia language television channel in Odisha.[4] She continues to be in the position of Founder & Managing Director of Odisha Television Ltd, which has become the largest television network in Odisha under her leadership. Today, Odisha Television Ltd.’s channels OTV, Tarang, Tarang Music, Prarthana & Alankar are market leaders in their respective categories.
Awards & Recognitions
Her success and contribution to entrepreneurship has not only earned her the moniker of ‘Queen of Odisha Airwaves,’ [5] but she has also received several accolades along the way. She received the ‘Outlook SpeakOut Awards - Top Women Achiever Honour’ [6] in 2019. She received the award for Outstanding Contribution to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), 2018–2019. She is also the recipient of the Devi Award in 2016 [7] instituted by The New Indian Express to celebrate & recognise exceptional women for their dynamism & innovation in their respective fields. In 2007, she was recognised as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
Jagi has also been associated with many distinguished institutions and industry bodies. She was the Eastern Region Chairman (2019) of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). During 2017–18 she was the Vice Chairperson of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) [8], Eastern Region Council. She was also the Chairperson of CII’s Odisha Council for 2 years (2001–02, 2002–03).
