Jeong Jae-jin

Jeong Jae-jin is a South Korean media artist and stage video designer, renowned for transforming the visual language of Korean performing arts. She is the founder and creative director of EPITAPH.Co, a performance media art company that blends immersive video design with cultural storytelling.

Early Life and Education

Jeong studied Western painting at Sejong University and earned her master’s degree in Art Engineering from Chung-Ang University’s Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science.[1] Her academic path included film and multimedia, which shaped her interdisciplinary approach to stage design.

Career and Artistic Philosophy

Jeong began her career in civic media and transitioned into performance art through dance and theater. Her debut in musical theater came with The Kingdom of the Winds (2006),[2] directed by Lee Gina. She gained national recognition for Seopyeonje (2012), where she used traditional Korean ink painting techniques to create poetic video projections.

She describes video design as “another actor on stage,” emphasizing its emotional and narrative role rather than mere background decoration. Her philosophy is rooted in empathy, memory, and transformation, often drawing from personal experiences with loss and healing.

Jeong founded EPITAPH.Co, inspired by the idea of a lasting epitaph — a tribute that remains etched in memory. The company develops modular performance products that integrate media art and technology, aiming to create immersive and therapeutic experiences.[3]

Philosophy and Social Engagement

Jeong’s interest in “well-ending performances” stems from personal loss and volunteer work in funeral rites. She has created memorial videos and legacy projects to help audiences process grief and celebrate life. Her work often incorporates dream imagery, hand-drawn sketches, and Korean cultural motifs.

She believes video design should be involved from the script stage, collaborating closely with directors and set designers to ensure emotional coherence. Her frustration with late-stage video integration led her to study stage design herself.
