Jake Leahy (born March 17, 1999) is a Bannockburn Elementary School District 106 Board of Education member and the youngest elected official in the state of Illinois.[1][2] His successful run for an uncontested school board position garnered media attention, including interviews on Dan Proft on WIND-AM[3] and Steve Cochran on WGN Radio.[4]
Life and work[edit]
Leahy was born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in unincorporated Lake County, Illinois, where he attended Bannockburn Elementary School District 106 for nine years and then Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois.[5] [6] After high school, he will be attending the University of Illinois.[7] Prior to running for school board, Jake worked on the campaigns for Robert Dold and Rod Drobinski.[8] He also had served as the National Outreach Director of American Youth in Politics, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to fostering you people's political involvement.[9] A central theme of his campaign was about setting an example of good government, in response to the ongoing budget battle in Springfield, Illinois.[10][11]
Leahy was elected with 28% of the vote, or 131 votes, in an uncontested election with four candidates on the ballot.[12][13][14] After his election he stated, "Voters agreed ... Springfield has been ignoring the will of the next generation for far too long, they cannot continue to recklessly borrow money on the back of my generation."[15] He has been critical of Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives Mike Madigan and has voiced support for Governor of Illinois Bruce Rauner.[16] He was a supporter of Rand Paul in the Republican Party presidential primaries, 2016.[17] His campaign website touted endorsements from prominent Illinois politicians such as Deputy Governor Leslie Munger and Lake County, Illinois Sheriff Mark Curran.[18]
