Jake Moss
Jake Moss (born 1994) is an Australian writer, artist and filmmaker. Since 2015 he has released over 20 independent projects, including art exhibitions, feature films, books and plays.
In 2019 his exhibition Jake Moss: With Feelings was presented at Brisbane Powerhouse.[1][2]. In 2020 his third poetry collection You're Welcome and I Apologise was selected by State Library of Queensland to be archived in the John Oxley Library[3].
In 2022 Moss released Boys Will Be, a self-funded micro-budget film that saw him create two versions of the same story, one as a comedy and the other as a drama. Each version starred the same actors in the same roles and featured the same locations, costumes and sets. After screening at film festivals, the film was released onto YouTube in April 2023[4].
In March 2023 Moss became the recipient of the Brisbane City Council's Lord Mayor's Creative Fellowship[5].
Personal Life
Moss was born in Brisbane, Australia and grew up in housing commission in Woodridge, Queensland[6], while attending Browns Plains State School, St. Francis College, St. Paul's Primary School Woodridge, Clairxaux Mackillop College and St. Laurence's College. Moss was also homeschooled during Grade Six[7]. He has six sisters and four brothers[8].
As a high school student Moss made his stage debut as an actor, performing in Engine by Janis Balodis at La Boite Theatre Company in 2010[9].
Upon completion of high school Moss studied film at university in Brisbane while also acting in plays at Brisbane Arts Theatre, where he'd go on to direct the second production of his own play Sex Shop in 2022[10][11][12].
During his 20s, while continuing to produce work as an artist, Moss spent over a year being homeless, where he formed a relationship with the volunteers of Rosies, a local charity that provides support for the homeless and socially isolated, and was later asked to design merchandise to celebrate its 35th birthday[13][14][15][16].
Criticism of Logan Art Gallery
On 11 August 2020, Moss began publicly condemning Logan City Council for having Logan Art Gallery permanently closed on Sundays[17] while surrounding council galleries with much smaller populations and less funding remained open on Sundays, as well as criticising the venue for lack of engagement with local youth, no social media presence, among other issues. This criticism came in the form of hundreds of memes and humorous social media posts that highlighted Moss's arguments for it to open Sundays, often citing the council's own annual reports and comparing them with annual reports of nearby council's to showcase its low attendance numbers[17].
Moss's criticism soon gained the attention of others including Judith Kerr, a reporter for The Courier Mail, who wrote an article on Moss's criticism of Logan City Council[18], as well as a group of undergraduate film students from Queensland University of Technology, who made a short documentary on the subject as an assignment, titled Jake Moss vs. Logan Art Gallery[19]. In the documentary Moss states "if you're not popular enough to be open on Sundays, you don't close Sundays, you change the way you fucking work, so that you can't afford to be closed Sundays"[19].
Two weeks after Moss began posting online about Logan Art Gallery, a petition was created by another local, Jak Nicholls, to open the public venue seven days a week.
As of June 2023, Moss has posted over 500 times about Logan Art Gallery being closed on Sundays[20].
Since Moss began publicly commenting on the gallery's performance it has undergone rebranding including a new logo, new website, new paint for the exterior of the building, and an official Instagram account[21][22].
The gallery remains closed on Sundays[23].
