From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Jakob Strickner (born 19 November 1915 in Gries am Brenner, Tyrol – 20 March 1994 ibid) was formerly a leading National Socialist in Tyrol, later a long-time local politician, innkeeper and farmer in Gries am Brenner and merchant in Innsbruck.

Life

At the beginning of 1933, Strickner joined the then illegal Nazi Party and belonged to the Sturmabteilung (SA). From January 1934, he was a member of the Schutzstaffel (SS), where he was tasked with establishing the SS in the Wipptal and Stubaital and leading it. Strickner was local group leader in Steinach am Brenner and involved in the July Putsch of 1934. After the Anschluss in 1938, he enriched himself with Jewish property and aryanized a business in Innsbruck. The SS-Hauptscharführer leased out his farm and inn in Gries am Brenner and moved to Innsbruck. He played a major role in the Kristallnacht of 1938 in Innsbruck. Strickner left the Roman Catholic Church at an early age and achieved a return to the church on March 22, 1946, with a questionable "rebaptism" at the Capuchins in Brixen. Still four years after the Nazi regime, on Easter Sunday 1949, the wanted mass murderer and notorious concentration camp doctor Josef Mengele was smuggled over the Brenner Pass by Strickner and Adolf Steiner from Merano. This escape assistance for Mengele occupied the media and politics for many years later, with which Strickner's Nazi past also became publicly known in 1985 through a court case. From 1956 to 1980 he was mayor of the municipality of Gries am Brenner. He was particularly committed to the school system in the municipality and was responsible for the construction of the common elementary school and making Gries am Brenner the main school in the Upper Wipptal. He also built the first kindergarten in the community. Furthermore, Strickner realized, among other things, the completion of the municipality-owned electric power station, the building of the community center and the development of the Sattelberg mountain.[1]

Honors

On February 13, 1973, by resolution of the municipal council, Jakob Strickner was granted honorary citizenship of the municipality of Gries am Brenner, which was conferred and publicly celebrated a few months later at a village festival in the presence of the district governor. Strickner was awarded the honorary citizenship of the municipality of Gries am Brenner by resolution of the municipal council.[2] Likewise, Strickner was appointed an honorary member of the Gries am Brenner Volunteer Fire Department in 1979 while still an active mayor.
