James Austin Kern
Jim Kern
Jim Kern (born August 14, 1934) is an American naturalist, conservationist, long distance trail developer, and author. He is the founder of the 1,300 mi (2,100 km) Florida National Scenic Trail (FT) and the Florida Trail Association.
Education and career:
Born James Austin Kern, in New York City, Kern grew up in Leonia, New Jersey. Kern attended Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale in 1956 with a degree in industrial engineering. While remaining in engineering school, he decided to become a wildlife photographer and travel the world. Kern moved to Florida in 1957 where he lectured for many years on wildlife and conservation subjects. In that same year, Kern traveled to Komodo Island to film the dragon lizards.[1] In 1966, following a 40-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail, Kern returned to Florida to found the Florida Trail and the Florida Trail Association. [2] [3] On March 28, 1983, Congress added the Florida Trail to the National Trails System. National Trails System[4] [5] In 1976 Kern co-founded the American Hiking Society with Bill Kemsley, founding publisher and editor of Backpacker magazine, and Paul Pritchard, then president of the Appalachian Trail Conference. [6] To dramatize the creation of AHS Kern organized and directed HikaNation, a hike from Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to the steps of the Capitol. [7][8] The American Discovery Trail evolved from this hike. [9] In 1990 Kern founded Big City Mountaineers, a high adventure program for disadvantaged teens. [10] In 2013 Kern formed Hiking Trails for America to support permanent protection and continuity for all National Scenic Trails. In 2014 he formed Friends of the Florida Trail to promote the acquisition of continuous right-of-way for the Florida Trail as a wilderness footpath set aside for posterity. Kern’s photographs have appeared in major magazines and books. He has written for Audubon, Backpacker, National Geographic and others.
Kern currently lives in St. Augustine, Florida and Highlands, North Carolina.
