James Campion Conway (born February 18, 1966) is an American novelist, poet, philosopher, and educator who was born on the US naval base in Corpus Christi, Texas. He is the son of Diane Carroll Conway and James Wilson Conway, who was a lieutenant in the US Navy at the time. He is also the grandson of noted radio and television pioneer Jim Conway.
Early life and career
Originating from Texas, he moved to Key West, Florida, in what would be the first of thirteen relocations before he turned 9 years old. He got frustrated by the frequent moves and always being the "new kid" in school, sometimes more than twice in the same year, so he became a reclusive child and kept to himself. It was in these early years that his unique point of view was established. He studied at York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, where he ran track and cross country for legendary running coach Joe Newton. He attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin, which is the alma mater of Spencer Tracy, Al Jarreau, and Harrison Ford (whose father had worked with Conway's grandfather in Chicago broadcasting). During these years, he read widely and was influenced by novelists such as Tolkien, Dinesen (the pen name of Karen Blixen), Kafka, Calvino, and others, as well as the poets Yeats and Keats.
In 2011, James, greatly influenced by the work of mythologist Joseph Campbell, published his debut novel The Vagabond King[1] to good reviews, some of which even used the words masterpiece and classic. The Vagabond King is a lyrical coming-of-age novel that weaves blues music, science, ancient mythology, and Hungarian and African history into a metaphysical mystery. Originally publishing under the name James Conway, he added his middle name, Campion, so as not to be confused with the Chicago-based Irish-American blues musician James Conway.
He operates a website called E Novel Advisor where he teaches subscribers how to write and market their novels. He also has a number of courses on writing, publishing, and marketing on Udemy.
