James Cizdziel (born March 5, 1968) is an Associate Professor of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Coordinator of Forensic Chemistry at the University of Mississippi [1]. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and has acted as principal investigator on grants from the NSF, EPA, USGS and DOE [2]. Cizdziel has published over 70 peer-reviewed publications [3] in the areas of analytical, environmental, and forensic chemistry. Most notably, Cizdziel has conducted extensive research in assessing and monitoring atmospheric mercury (Hg) levels. Currently, he is investigating micro-plastic pollution in the Mississippi River [4] and trace evidence from 3D-printed firearms [5].

Education and Professional History

Cizdziel graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from SUNY at Buffalo before attending the University of Nevada Reno to receive his Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry. Following his Ph.D., he conducted research on environmental mercury (Hg) levels as a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow for the US EPA's National Exposure Research Laboratory [6]. Cizdziel also served as Senior Chemist for the Harry Reid Center for Environmental Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, before becoming an Associate Research Professor for UNLV. Since moving to Oxford, MS in 2008, Cizdziel has gone from Assistant to Associate Professor at the University of Mississippi and is on track to become a Full Professor.
