James Comey Senate Intelligence Committee testimony

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

On June 8, 2017, James Comey delivered three hours of sworn testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, regarding his dismissal as FBI director and links between Trump associates and Russian officials. [1] The NY Times characterized Comey's testimony by stating that Comey said "that he believed President Trump had tried to derail an investigation into his national security adviser, and accused the president of lying and defaming him and the F.B.I."[2]

Comey compared the President's request that he end the investigation to Henry II's question "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" [3]

Some businesses closed down for 3 hours that morning to watch the testimony in full.[4][5] [6] In some cases, "covfefe cocktails" and other Trump-themed beverages were served at the watch parties. [7][8][9]

Several prosecutors said afterwards that Comey's allegations presented a prosecutable case of obstruction of justice, if believed. [10] On the other hand, Trump stated that Comey's testimony vindicated him.[11]

According to Twitter data, the Comey testimony garnered over 3.6 million tweets during the event.[12]

Several analysts from the right, left, and center agreed that Trump's conduct, as described by Comey, was inappropriate; but disagreed whether it would amount to an impeachable offense.[13]

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz has discussed in detail in multiple pieces he authored that President Donald Trump, whom he did not support for President in 2016, did nothing inappropriate or illegal when meeting with Comey. In one of several pieces authored by Dershowitz, a Hillary Clinton supporter, he wrote, "The president can, as a matter of constitutional law, direct the attorney general, and his subordinate, the director of the FBI, tell them what to do, whom to prosecute and whom not to prosecute. Indeed, the president has the constitutional authority to stop the investigation of any person by simply pardoning that person." [14]
